Hello all, since the service pack 2 became available months ago my computer has recognized that its available but fails to install it every time it tries. When it gets to installing update part 1 of 1 or what ever it sits for about 3 hours with the little hard drive light flickering and after 3 or so hours shuts off and adds a "failed" into the Windows update log? any help or ideas would be super useful, from what ive heard the service pack has a lot of fixes for bugs and what not,...
Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (KB948465) - Installation date: 10/19/2009 3:01 PM

Posting the failed portion of the log would very helpful.
That said, download the IT download
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...d5-f907-4406-9012-a5c3199ea2b3&displaylang=en
Load MSCONFIG, disable everything in the start up tab, do a fresh reboot, disable any AV programs and run the install.
If that fails, post the log. -
thanks ill try that,
where do i find the failed part of the post? -
In the windows update log, at the bottom.
-
Error Code 80073712
Hope that helps, I tried saving a version of the update and disabling all start up accept my "Windows OS" and it still failed.
I also tried downloading the "Update install readyness tool" but it still failed after that.
I believe the problem is related to some sort of issue with my 'windows store' ?

did you download the service pack as a +-600MB file or did you use Windows Update?
-
Click on Start, and then type
CMD
in the search box at the bottom
Wait until CMD appears in the top of the start menu, right click and choose RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR
In the DOS window, type the following commands
press Enter
NET STOP BITS
press Enter
NET STOP WUAUSERV
press Enter
NET STOP CRYPTSVC
press Enter
REN C:\WINDOWS\SOFTWAREDISTRIBUTION SD1
press Enter
REN C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CatRoot2 CR2
press Enter
NET START BITS
press Enter
NET START WUAUSERV
press Enter
NET START CRYPTSVC
press Enter
Now run windows update again, or run the IT update you downloaded above -
Thanks Gerry, i followed those instructions but it still did not sucessfully install?
-
I had the same problem while installing SP2 from update >
Fixed by downloading it from MICROSOFT website and it worked fine -
That is what he did.
Wow. I was sure that would fix it. I'm reluctant to say this, but post your entire Windows update log (zip it up). -
I hope you allready have ServicePack 1 installed
You can manually try to download and install SP2 tou, as zimbros12 said/did. -
I can do that, zip it up?
-
yes...zip the log file and attach it...you may need to make a copy and zip that up. copy the file (ctrl+C) then paste it (ctrl+v)
-

Here is this guys solution
http://www.windowsreference.com/win...nstall-error-80073712-through-windows-update/ -
I tried that solution but i dont have the file it calls for to delete? -
I think you are going to need to attach the windows log if you want better answers...
-
Had the same problem on one of my vista 32bit laptops. I must have tried to install service pack 2 at least 15 times. It would always install update 1 and 2 fast. Update 3 would crawl at 27% finally reach 100 after 1 hour and suddenly uninstall itself which took another hour or so. I did two thing and it worked so I'm not sure which was the actual solution.
1. In services I had the software Licensing disabled so I enabled it
2. I uninstall all security applications and just had windows firewall running.
Prior to this I had tried the registry tweaks, window readiness tool, stand alone, boot fix and none of them worked. -
Gerry which log would you like?
The update history Log?
unfortunaly its gone, I tried some other 'fix it' solutions listed from Microsoft and the log is gone.. I tried last night for three hours or so to no avail searching forums and what not for the error i am reporting and it seem this has happened to many people most of which dont ever seem to find a solution, i have read of Microsofts techs closing cases with customers on this issue becuase they couldnt resolve it.
sad face -
in c:\windows,
you will find
WindowsUpdate.log
It will be quite large.
right click on it, choose COPY, then righ click on your desktop and choose PASTE. Then right click on the file and choose SENT TO > COMPRESSED (zipped) FOLDER
Attach that file to a post -
Thanks Gerry, Ill do that when I get home tonight.

all right, this is what I want you to do.
First shut down (not reboot) your computer and allow any updates form last night to install. Restart.
We are only doing this because yesterday was Update Tuesday and I don't want to cause a problem with something non Service Pack realted. It probably isn't necessary, but let's play it safe.
Start > type in the search box
services.msc
when services.msc appears at the top of the START MENU, right click it and choose RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR
Find WINDOWS MANAGEMENT INSTRUMENTATION. Double click it. Choose STOP button. Windows will inform you it needs to shut down some other things as well. Say YES
Now, start > computer
Navigate to
c:\windows\system32\wbem
right click REPOSITORY
Change it to OLDREPOSITORY.
Reboot. (Windows will recreate REPOSITORY on reboot)
Run Windows update again.
Install Service Pack -
Hey gerry, thanks for the continued support.
I followed those instructions and the install made more progress then usual but failed.
this was the failure message.
ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND(0x80070002)
any ideas?
Thanks
-J -
Needyou to attach the Windows Log again so I can compare
-
here is the most recent logAttached Files:

It failed a different update that time:
what timezone are you in, and are you set to the correct time?
If both are corect,
Go here
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957310
Download and run the system readyness tool described in the article, then download and install the update manually.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...1c-bf15-482a-b674-de48ec926020&displaylang=en
Then try running the previously downloaded Service Pack
You can try doanloading and installing this manually, but first... -
Did you try the advice that I gave you? AS I said before I tried, registry tweak, boot fix, stand alone installer, windows readiness tool, selective start up, safe mode, every fix available with google and none worked. I probably had more unsuccessful installs than you're experiencing.
1. In services.msc.... I had the software Licensing disabled so I enabled it
2. I uninstall, not disabled, but uninstalled all security applications(firewall, spyware, antivirus) and just had windows firewall running.
It worked.
Sometimes its the simple fixes verse trying to modify you laptop, it was for me at least.
Give it a try.
Windows Vista Service pack 2 wont install? :/
