Hey guys, I just finished reinstalling vista for the second time now. The reason for reinstalling was that my windows updates would not work, I had some weird error that only a handful of people had. But I have now culprit! A WINDOWS VISTA UPDATE! Whenever I try and install all of the updates, my computer will not boot from restarting. The only way I am able to boot my computer is be shutting it down. Whenever I restart it, it gets to the loading screen with the bar, and gets stuck about on the half way mark (as shown) and then shows a blue screen of death error for a split second then reboots and continues in that same pattern until I decide to press the power button to shut it off.

Does anyone have any idea which update could possibly be doing this?!?!

    Thanks a bunch,
    -Larson

    Sorry to hear that...

Why not make and image of your OS and save the re-installation time....
After that just install each update separately, or use Vlite to create a custom vista installation disc (with all the updates included)...
You can find the "problem causing" update this way...or just wait for the official SP1 release.

How do you make an 'image of your OS'?

Making an image does not solve the problem.

    @larson:
As soon as your system reboots, press and hold down F5. Then you should see Windows boot with a bunch of text scrolling past. It will stop where the problem is, and that should give you a good clue about what is going on.

Orev that is quite true...but it saves a lot of time, if larson has do a couple more reinstalls. Now do you really think that he'll be able to identify what's causing the problem by F5...if his response to my recommendation was " How do you make an 'image of your OS'?"

larson, if you're not a tech geek then just wait for the official release of SP1. It seems that some update you load into your OS makes it pretty unstable. Now you can try to track which update it was or just wait for SP1, and live without the updates for a month or two. It's up to you.

Any how I kept my firewall on Comodo v3 and Avast Pro AV on and did all the Vista updates but left out those 2 above.. Sorry I lied there was a Video driver update also which I did not do until last Friday(my updates I did about 12 Jan) and I have to say no problems. I also have my updated set to something like find updates but let me choose to downnload and install.
I'll try and find the post on that KB file and get back to you..
    Using Vista Ultimate here.
    Good luck.

Just to add I have disabled many auto startup programs from run on windows and adjusted my boot time that may also have some effect on the problem.

I had this problem too and solved it by installing all the updates in groups of three (after a clean install) until my computer did what is happening to you, then doing a system restore, installing the three updates one by one until figuring out which one is the problem update, then hiding it so it won't show up anymore. Updates that caused this problem for me..

    KB943899
    KB929735

FYI, I did not install the optional driver updates for my video card and integrated webcam that came up on Microsoft Update.

I've got it. Joined up just to tell you all. You need to get the drivers disk that came with your computer and install "Dell Notebook System Software" under the "System Utilities" Category. This is just my first boot after trying that (I figured I'd check online to see if anyone had found something else first), but it appears to be clean and stable
