My roommates brother recently bought a new computer (Dell) with Vista on it. As of today he started up his computer and it freezes on startup (it gets passed the windows login screen and then the screen will turn black and the computer freezes). He says he hasn't installed anything new since yesterday and has no idea what the problem is.
I told him to start in safe mode, and that works. I told him to go in msconfig and uncheck everything then to start up normally. Windows still freezes on startup. He ran the virus scan in safe mode and gets 10 errors and no vrius. AVG will freeze after giving the details so he can't get any more information on the errors.
He also tried a system restore and that did not fix the problem.
Does anyone know what the problem could be and how to fix it? He's going to bring his computer to school tomorrow so I can have a look at it. Hopefully I'll be able to figure it out when I see it (It's always easier when you have the computer). But I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask for help early.
Thanks for any help.

This exactly happened to me before. It was one of the updates from Windows Update. I rolled back and it worked. I tried doing the update again, same results. Vista wont load.
Tell him to get a hold of a Vista install disk and do a Repair Install. This will refresh all the system files.
Windows Vista freezes un startup.
