Hi, I just ordered a laptop that is coming with Windows Vista Home Edition and want to upgrade to Ultimate. Does anyone have a guide to go about doing this? I'm honestly taking a stab in the dark because I heard it was much more difficult than past OS upgrades.
Thanks.

i would get the full version, and do a fresh install - much easier and it will take all the crap off your laptop will come with it
PM me and i'll give you some info on where to get it for near free. -
I'll already have it (my father got it from work) and just need to know like how I should go about deleting everything first. I don't know if the laptop will come with any disk I need to take everything off or not. And then the whole drive partitioning thing..

Anyone? I'm trying to upgrade from home to ultimate. Do I just insert the CD then restart?

you have to have the drivers first, usually they come in a cd with the laptop or you can download updated drivers from the seller's website.
Don't upgrade until you have the drivers because if you do a fresh install itll remove anything that's on your Hd including the drivers... -
I would suggest a clean installation rather than an upgrade. What is the disk type you have (upgrade or full) ? To do a clean installation back up all your important data and then format the partition (the partition which has Vista Home). You dont need to repartition unless you think the existing partition is too small or too large.
If you have a full installation then just put in the DVD, set the boot order in the BIOS to boot from the DVD, then follow the on-screen instructions. If you have an upgrade disk then follow these instructions to do a clean installation. -
I'm new to this, thanks in advance. -

hit delete (the key) as your computer starts up, you should get into the bios (keep pressing it if you dont know when to press it)
Once your in there look around your bios untill you find a setting that says somthing along the lines of boot priority, or boot device order.
Chage it so that it checks your optical drive first usually this is default on most systems I belive.
Drivers you install after you get the OS up and going.
2 partitons is good not only for data safty but for setting up dual boot -

doing a vista --> vista upgrade is designed as part of the framework of the OS it should be seamless and cause no issues to do an over the top intall of any prior vista to a higher version. There is only a few diffrences between them, all the core structure is the same. It will just install the additional features. I would not worry about a clean install to do an upgrade in this case unless you feel you want a clean install to get rid of any stuff on your computer you dont want. -

Yes, but if you do an over the top install it will retian everything you have now, files and drivers.
Id do that first.
You should also have base drives on the cd that came with the computer, you can get them from there.
If you want to take an extra step in caution tho go download all the drivers now and burn them on a cd so you have them for later, most importantly your eathernet/wireless drivers so you can get on the internet to download anything else you need. Vista has baisc drivers for almost anything like that in my experience tho. -

A partition on a hard drive is like spliting a hard drive into pieces creating a "virtual" hard drive if you will.
Basicly it makes the computer think and run like you have more than one hard drive. So you can put a diffrent operating system on each partition if you like, or keep important files on a diffrent partition to make them easier to back up and keep them abit safer.
