This may sound obvious, but it seems you have a problem with a Symantec product. Do you have Norton anti-virus, or any other Norton product?
If yes, you can try to boot into safe mode (hit F8 during boot to access that option). If you manage to boot into safe mode uninstall any Norton or Symantec products and see if that fixes the problem.
Also, you might want to try the Norton Removal Tool. -
Thanks for the reply, tried this, problem is in safe mode for some reason will not let me uninstall any programmes.

Run the Norton Removal Tool from safemode.

Thanks for the reply, did that and came up with the following
nvmini.sys - Address F6AB2FF0 base at F6AB2000, Datestamp 46381e21 -
Ouch. Apparently, that's a rootkit. If that's true (it appears to be so, from a quick Google search, but you should investigate), that's quite hard to remove.
I recommend you start a new thread in the security forum and ask for help in removing that specific file. Those folks can help you best. -
It's a polymorphic virus and it infects .exe files.
I clean viruses from computers for a living, and I wouldn't even waste my time on this. Virut and variants have been cropping up a lot lately, I've tried fruitlessly to clean a few, and it just doesn't happen. I think I'll eventually be able to do it, but when every executable on a system is infected... that's quite a bit of repairing that needs to be done... manually.
Reload Windows, and next time use a better anti-virus than Norton.
I'll also add that you should be extremely careful if you plan on backing up any data from the drive prior to reloading, don't touch any files that have the extension .exe or .scr, no matter how badly you may want them. Only attach the drive as an external on a system, do not run anything on the drive, make sure autorun is disabled. -
Thank you for your advise, I have reloaded windows amd all appears to be fine except that I have no volume available can anyone help me further
-
Or, you the volume adjustment icon cannot be seen at the right-bottom corner?
Solution:
Right click on your Taskbar and click on Properties. Go to Notification Area tab. Make sure you check Volume. Then, click Apply and OK. -
Not able to play sound - no driver installed
-
What's your specific model of laptop?

I used NOD32 but didn't feel like paying for it anymore. I like NOD32 a bit better, but Avira is excellent as well. -
I see...thanks...+rep coming!
