Hey guys. I need some major help, pls!

I was browsing the internet on my Toshiba Qosmio F20...then all of a sudden, the comp goes kinda haywire and the laptop restarts. I'm thinking "ok, wtf..." then it restarts. I got this blue screen saying:

    (quote)
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentation or backup utilities. Check your hard drive configuration and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

    Technical information:
    *** STOP: 0x00000024 (0x00190203, 0x82332A98, 0xC0000102, 0x00000000)
    (end quote)

I don't really have a clue as to what to do...I have the recovery disk but it'll erase all my files...

(btw, just typing this on a friend's laptop).

All the help would be appreciated! Thanks y'all =)

p.s. I got Windows XP Pro

You are a Blue Screen of Death Victim my friend. Welcome to the club :)
    See my Sig!

The only way to really know what happened, or what is happening is to check ur Event Logs. Right click "My Computer", select "Manage"...Expand "Event Viewer" by clicking the little plus sign thingy and go through each of the different logs...such as Applications and System. Look for Red Xs..those are the serious errors.

Double click it for more info. Some of the errors may have been resolved by Microsoft already and might have info. to resolve the issue. You should see something like this: "For more information, see Help and Support Center at www.microsoft.com". Click the link and a couple seconds after you will see a new window open up that may give u a way to solve the problem.

You can post the error here if u like for further assistance.

Edit: And I should say this too...i've been a victim of BSOD many times...the most recent was this past Sunday..I had to re-install the OS beacuse the system wouldn't boot AT ALL...not even Safe Mode. So my suggestion to you is to try and backup all ur vital information/data that u wouldn't really want to lose on an external HDD or USB device...Just incase the problem gets severe enough to prevent ur system from booting...like mine did..didn't even see it coming.

Ok...this is worth a try if u don't want to lose ur files and data...

    Repair Installation Technique.

Now as it states in Step 4...it doesn't always have the second Repair option, but if it does consider urself lucky, and even luckier if it worked so u can at least get back ur data.

This is of course if u haven't already re-installed a fresh copy of XP.

If you need to reinstall...use a Linux LiveCD to copy off all of your files.

Hey Makaveli, thanks for the reply. I have actually tried that before on my desktop (which has XP Pro)...however, this laptop is on XP Home and it doesn't have that option (I tried).

Theros, how does Linux LiveCD work then, in order for me to copy the files? =)

Ok cool...with the Linux Live CD u would basically put in the disc in the computer, shut it down...power it up and boot from the Live CD...it's like an Operating System "live" on the CD...so the computer will boot from the CD to Linux's Operating System..there u will have access to all ur documents on the C: drive of ur laptop...the files would look different because it's now running Linux but the data is the same. So then u would just need and external drive of some sort to copy over the data that u want to save, then u could go ahead and re-install XP.

Now...I have not used the Linux Live CD but I have the Knoppix Live CD (which is, i'm guessing just about the same thing)...I'm not big on Linux either but from what I know that's basically what Theros is talking about.

Now I don't exactly know how u can get ur hands on the Linux Live CD, maybe Theros or someone else can guide u as to how to obtain it...I got my Knoppix version while I was in college from a professor. They are supposed to be free so i'm guessing u could just download it and burn it to a CD...Again Theros am sure can guide you as to what to do.

I've managed to get hold of a copy of Windows XP Home Installation disc. However, I don't have the "repair installation" option!!! Why is that? I saw some tutorials online stating that you can do this with Windows XP Home (I know you can do it with Pro)...but this one doesn't have it? Is it normal??
I don't wanna use the recovery console and my last resort is the Knoppix...

THanks for all the help guys. Much appreciated =)
