A few weeks ago I upgraded some of the home PC's specs and installed XP and when I shut it down it would eventually come to an XP splash screen saying it's now safe to turn off your PC, then I had to press the power button to turn off the tower. It had ME on it prior to this and the shut down option would always turn off the base unit.

On Friday I installed a USB 2.0 and Firewire combination card and XP detected it and installed the drivers, but it has affected the boot up as it sometimes freezes on the initial Packard Bell splash screen and when shutting down it now closes XP and actually turns the PC off without displaying the XP exit splash screen. The PC seems to be running fine apart from these two things.

Does anybody know why this might have happened, mainly the shut down thing?

Does your computer support ACPI? It sounds like your motherboard and/or your power supply doesn't support this feature.

Yup, or the ACPI drivers are not installed or not working correctly. Check device manager if anything is reported there.

    Thanks!

I'll have a look next time I'm on it and report back.

Update your BIOS and check your driver page for ACPI drivers.

Sorry for not seeing your post. I can't actually remember if I fixed it or not because the PC was passed on to a family friend a couple of years ago.
