It's been awhile since i've done a fresh install of XP, and I am getting a confusing problem.

When I boot up from the disc, which is for XP Media Center 05, at the header of the screen, it's saying it's for XP Professional.

Once you go through some of the initial options like choosing partitions, formatting, etc....it does at one point say it's for XP Media Center. Once it actually starts copying files, it does go back to saying XP Pro.

Once that is done, computer reboots and Windows does the install, and it starts to ask for Disc 2 of XP Pro CD. I just went ahead and tried to put my disc 2 in and it doesn't work.

Another dead computer for me. Any ideas?

Hmm odd. You should only have one CD for Windows XP. Did these discs come with your computer? What machine are you trying to install it on?

BTW, Windows XP MCE is based on Windows XP Professional, so seeing some Pro branding might be a normal part of the install process.

There are three discs total, one of them is specifically for the 2005 update.

I browsed through the Microsoft site for a contact number on support, come to find it's $59.99.

Have you looked at disc 2 to seeif there's damage?

I cannot say what is wrong with your disc, but I can comfirm that XP Media Center 2005 required 2 CDs and asked for the second CD halfway through the install as you describe. Also, it presents itself as XP Professional during setup.

The only thing that comes to mind is that your CD-Rom is a sata drive? Windows needs special drivers to load a sata drive, so if you did not install the controller drive, the install would be unable to read the CD-rom

It's not a SATA drive, plus I've already gotten through the first boot disc, so I doubt it's a CD drive issue. But who knows. I've been on some bad computer luck lateley. hahaa........

I didn't think it was likely, to be truthful. Gotta be a bad disk then....
