Can someone explain to me how this works?

I need to get XP Pro on my computer, but my computer came with Media Center on it. Does the "upgrade" version of XP Pro upgrade from other XP versions (media center/home) or from previous operating systems (ME/2000/etc.)?

i don't know for sure as i've never done this but my logic is that since media center was released after pro, it's probably unlikely you can upgrade to pro

If I understand it correctly, you should be able to use the XP Pro Upgrade CD to do a fresh install - what it apparently won't do is an "upgrade" (where it retains your previous data, etc.).

My college requires XP Professional (due to the network, something about domains I think).

Is there a way for me to get on their network with Media Center, or must I upgrade to Professional?

I doubt u really need xp pro, even with their reccomendations. U gotta realize that not everyone is gonna go out and buy xp pro for 200 bux if they have home just cuz they went to school. and what about all those win 2000 users, they cant just all update to it like that if they have older computers.

As a student at a school which also reccomends xp pro, ull be fine. I used 98, 2k, 2k3, xp home, pro, linux and vista, adn they all worked fine on their stupid network/domain.

So just go with what u got.

adinu is right, xp pro may allows you to connect to certain networks that home can't but if its a college, it really should support all xp versions
