I'm currently using a Toshiba A200 laptop and my Windows XP is spyware-free, but I have issues when logging in after bootup. Everything loads nice and fast, but once I enter my password my laptop sits there for 1-5 minutes without any hard disk activity before it finally decides to continue logging in. What could be the reason for this stall?

I've seen that happen when windows tries to connect to certain network devices that don't respond.
Does anything in event viewer show a hint?
Does it happen if you use a different user profile? -
what kind of Internet Security Suite are you using?
and did you make sure your HDD is free or bad sectors? -

download a program called bootvis by microsoft. Use it to log the time it takes for each driver to load. There's a high chance that a driver failed to load and hanged at startup thus causing those symptoms. With bootvis you can find the failed driver and reinstall or uninstall them to solve the problem.
