I'll say it a million times if I have to. Vista kicks the crap out of XP for responsiveness on my XPS 1710. I don't game so I don't care about gaming performance, that said I wouldn't go back to XP.

no way!, Vista is 10x better than XP. after using vista i never want to go bak to XP. vista is better for gaming cuz of the direct X 10. when i play games, its way smoother when theres alot of players in the server. Aero glass can take alot of memory but its worth it. i have the vista business because i dont like all the bloat that utimate has

Honestly, my quick take of the review, is that they are both about the same, some things currently really don't work on Vista (lack of OpenGL sounds like it could be a major issue for some people) however other things seem about the same, no major speed improvement from anything (DX10? Does anything actually use it yet?)

Anyway, interesting read, but so far, nothing saying "you must have this" or "god forbid don't get this".

XP worked well as an update simply because for the "average" user it was the first upgrade since Windows 98, ME SUCKED (I can't stress that enough) 2000 was more of a business OS, so XP was the first real update and definitely added a lot of improvements over 98 (having just started trying to play around with my old 98 laptop again, wow, what a pain that is!). Vista, other than 64 bit compatibility which may become important in the future, doesn't appear to have anything to hugely recommend it so far (assuming you are happy with XP).

If I could get it for free I probably would try it, but I've seen no reason to pay for it.

It's really an old hat now, that new Microsoft programs are problematic/inferior.

The new WHQL ATI drivers implement OpenGL under VISTA. That could considerably speed up some games that were running very slow in vista.

the review does not add anything to what i personally already experience(d):
    1. vista still has some kinks in the graphic department, but i m safe to say that this is due to graphic manu that are still adapting to the new OS
    2. benchmark apps have not yet taking the internal working of vista in consideration so - using them to make a point is fruitless
    3. if one read thru the review and coming to the last page, it is just pointed out (indirectly) that vista is lagging in graphical performance

.. i have not yet seen a piece of soft that is stamped "vista ready", most of the current (compatible) apps come from users like myself to try them all out to "see" how vista is doing in backward.compatible support, so one cannot expect any better performance

.. regardless, my 2 cents, apart from the graphic kinks and gaming, i would not have a problem with getting the next system with vista installed (upgrading is another story - due to $) :)

    cheers ...

The reviewer say 'stick w/ XP', but in only 2 scenarios. To quote the article:
    - "If you really need your PC to finish huge encoding, transcoding or rendering workloads within a defined time frame, yes, it is. Don't do it; stay with XP."
    - "...and we clearly advise against replacing Windows XP with Windows Vista if you need to run professional graphics applications."

    But he also says:
""Vista is the better Windows, because it behaves better, because it looks better and because it feels better."

After having RTM installed for 2 months, even without a couple of drivers being available until the last week or so, I have to admit Vista is growing on me. Performance is fine, and it being slower than XP is not noticable in day to day use and playing games (mostly Company of Heroes, I don't play Unreal). With the numbers so close in many of thier benchmarks, I have a feeling that any minor speed differences will be tweaked out as applications get updates to support Vista-specific enhancements and drivers are optimized for Vista.

If you game, I'd recommend setting up a dual-boot scenraio for now, so that you can still use XP for gaming and Vista for everything else. If you're not a gamer, then Vista all the way. It is much more responsive (on relatively modern hardware), more stable, and looks and feels much better than XP.

If you have a dual-core processor, Vista's scheduler makes MUCH better use of dual-core CPU's.

Haha Tom's Hardware sounds almost exactly like my first impressions. I didn't run any of those benches though.

But yeah, take it from someone who has both XP and Vista: Vista is "snappier" in general and you notice things get started and shutdown much quicker. Also, I have not had any crashes or instability, unless you count some programs that would not start due to how Windows' registry works. However, as noted you will notice a reduction in performance in some applications. I do believe this is the cause of drivers, so we'll stay tuned for updates in that area.

These guys say it does: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=101284

The way I look at it is, it's taken XP 5 years and 2 service packs to get where it is today. If Vista is starting out brand new from day one performing at the same level or more as XP, then the future looks very bright. It's not revolutionary right out of the gate but more will come down the road.

A lot of the reviews I have read don't encourage people to line up at Best Buy tonight and wait in line for it but if you are buying a new computer, you might as well make sure it has Vista.

As far as upgrading, Some will argue, "What's the point? If its the same as XP I'll stick with XP" and that's fine. I look at Vista as a starting point and in some ways it's already much better than XP. I look forward to my Express Upgrade disc arriving and I will be installing it.
