    Hello, guys

I've watched some of videos on YouTube, showing boot up speed of OS X on Macbooks. On average, OS X takes about 24-26 seconds to boot up (The longest boot up time I saw is ~41 secs, fastest is ~15 secs). So I tested my laptop (Windows XP Pro SP2) to see how it performs.

    Here are my results:

    Boot Up - 64.0 Secs
    Shutdown - 15.1 Secs
    Firefox - 8.8 Secs
    MS Words 2007 - 12.2 Secs
    iTunes - 12.7 Secs
    Photoshop CS3 - 21.8 Secs
    Adobe Reader 8 - 2.9 Secs (I removed all plug-ins that I don't use)

    My laptop spec: (VAIO S4) Pentium M 1.73GHz, 2GB RAM, 60GB @5400RPM.
I disabled most of services, start up programs and use classic theme before I tested.

If you have time to test boot up speed, I would like to see your results as well.

I think the boot up time of 64 seconds is a bit long.I haven't measured mine. But its about 40ish seconds.

I agree that 64 seconds is a bit long

I think I remember reading that XP was designed to cold boot in about 30 seconds. But I don't think that takes into consideration all the crap that we install on them that has to be loaded at startup. A good startup manager really helps and adjusting the prefetch can dramatically improve startup........

You are kind of limited by the processor speed, but definitely limited by the hard drive. IDE (aka, older tech) isn't as fast as the current SATA tech and drives do perform better than they did.

    My XPS 420 2.4GHz Q6600 with a 7200RPM RAID 1 boots in about 20 seconds, 25 max.

My D430 1.2GHz ULV single core with a 4200RPM 1.8" IDE drive boots in about 60-90 seconds depending on what I'm doing.

I regularly achieved 45 seconds on a laptop with a 40GB 4200RPM HD, 512MB of RAM, and a P4 Prescott. Come on, your Sony can do better!! ;)

I don't know what else I could do to speed up my boot time.
I mean I did disable all unnecessary services and start up applications.
I suspect that firewall, anti-virus and auto-defragmentation programs might be the cause of longer boot time.

Anyway, I've never feel that 1 min booting is a problem. Probably because I compare to those desktops at my university (they take, like, 2-3 mins to boot).

It's good to know what the average boot time is, so I can use as a deciding factor when I buy a new laptop.

...wondering whether Windows can beat OS X 15 secs boot time?

Wow, that's really long. Probably you have many background applications running?

XP is an age old OS. Still you are testing boot up time for it? Now it's time to test Vista lol.

My XP boots in 30 seconds or less, not sure about shutdown.
Ubuntu boots in about 30 seconds, and shuts down in 10.

Vista boots up even slower than XP.

My 1.5ghz 5400 RPM HD Vista boots up in 40-45 seconds. I'd say their pretty good for my specs. ;)

It takes my HP a255c desktop about 1 minute to boot. My system is very clean so it's probaly due to the slow hard drive (120GB 5400RPM PATA with 1MB of cache).

I cannot use Vista on my laptop. Sony do not provide Vista drivers for my model. Beside, XP is faster anyway.
