hi, i'm new here, but need some desperate help. I have a new Acer aspire 5102 wlmi, only like 3 months old. Got it back in November. Suddenly last night, when I went to reboot my computer, the computer wont start up.

It will get past the Acer splash screen, then when the Windows XP splash screen comes up, the blue bar that is moving, it will stop and the computer really freeze.

Now since i've been turning the laptop on and off via power switch, it comes up to the screen giving choices of rather to boot it from safe mode, last good known configure, start windows normally, etc etc. When I choose to start up with any of the 3 safe mode options when it scans all the files, it will stop at

    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\agpCPQ.sys

it'll just be stuck and frozen on that

but when when i choose to start with Last known good configuration, or start windows normally; it might or might not get past the Windows XP splash screen. But if it does, it will come to the blue check disk screen.

When it counts down from 10 seconds to 0 giving the time frame to deside rather to skip the check disk or not, it will freeze at 8 seconds if you don't press any button. But then if you do press a button before it freezes at 8 seconds, then it will continue on for a split second; getting rid of the count down and show one period (dot) showing the time waiting to go through normal start up.

get what i mean by one period/dot. how when it loads or it goes . . . . . .

    "dot dot dot dot dot"

I tried starting up with the acer recoveory disk that I made when I first initially started up my laptop when I bought it. But when it loads the first recovery disk, it will freeze while it says, "Please Wait ..."

what the hell can I do  :(

again it's a Acer Aspire 5102 wlmi laptop, that was purchased back in November 2006. So it's brand new for the most part.

Standard question: Is anything overclocked? :)

next suggestion: Try booting a different OS (burn a Linux live CD, or maybe use BartPE to make a similar Windows live CD. If you have access to Vista, you can try that)

Other than that, sounds like you may have to send it in for repairs. If you can't reinstall Windows, there's not much you can do. (other than try to install another OS first)

Its not necessarily that, but the next item on the list that is causing the problem, as XP loads drivers alphabetically

Try having a look in: Event Viewer (Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer)

Any new hardware?* From usb drive to replacing laptop HD :p Could be some hardware malfunctioning... I'd tell you to look in device manager but...

2nd to last resort (as if in last resort is reinstall): http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;304449

*I want to emphasise as a personal rule, a reformat to be the last resort to suggest, unless you've been hit with a trojan/virus

    nope, I never oc'd before.

LFC-the computer doesn't even start up, period. It doesn't load windows. It freezes on Windows XP's splash screen when it trys to load up

yeah not sure, my computer is pretty well protected. I'm always running norton (yeah yeah yeah, norton..), lavasoft adaware, spybot search and destroy, webroots windows washer

I can't stand the fact that i'll be losing all of my lecture projects and "Everything" if i reformat. But I might have to. Only problem is.. I need to buy a retail XP, since ACER doesn't take dells xp cd or anything.

Don't reformat until you've saved your documents. Can do that just by booting a live cd of some kind, and then connecting to a LAN, so you can copy your files to another computer.

Apart from that, if your computer came with Windows, that license is still valid. Contact Acer if you don't have a way to reinstall Windows. (Either they'll have to send you a proper XP cd, or at least a working recovery CD or something)

But see how far you can get with a live cd of some sort.

Just did a google. Interesting thread here, may give you ideas (you have nothing to lose anyway!)

But can you boot into safe mode?! You should be able to press F8 or whatever Acer use before XP starts loading things to choose your boot option

Thanks lfc, i read that thread. Seems like everyone saying that a updated bios is needed. All those people had different computers but when they updated their bios seems like it worked again.

But how exactly would I be able to update my bios on my laptop?... I know ACER just came out with their new bios, but I can't use command promt or anything. So... is there another way how to install the bios by booting from the cd-rom?

Go into Recovery Console (Command Prompt from XP CD):
    Type:
    CHKDSK C: /F

thats should do, i thin your have corrupted data causing bootup to screw up.
