After a long-announced transition, June 30 marks the end of an era at Microsoft. Well, really it's the end of two eras.

Most people think of Bill Gates, of course, and I'll have plenty more to say about his impending shift to part-time work in the coming days. But another epoch is also really coming to an end--that of Windows XP.

As of June 30, large PC makers will no longer be able to sell Windows XP-based PCs, at least on mainstream notebooks and desktops. Retailers will also have only until their current supply is exhausted to sell boxed copies of the operating system.

Its only when the official sales stop from large companies.

Doesn't mean you can't find it if you want it and support continues until 2014.

Seems XP will be available well into 2010 according to Microsoft.

Windows XP Home for ULCPCs will be available until the later of June 30, 2010. link.

Today (June 3, 2008) at Computex, Microsoft Corp. announced that following the success of Windows on netbooks, the Windows offering is being extended to include nettop devices. Netbooks are commonly referred to as ultralow-cost PCs (ULCPCs) and were originally intended for students and other first-time PC customers in emerging markets.. link

I'll give Vista a shot once I have a machine that can support it, but I'm planning on going exclusively Linux if I don't like it... I just tried out Ubuntu, and I've got to say it is pretty amazing. From the (little) experience with Vista I have had, Linux is a promising alternative.

Ah well, to be honest, I'm a bit tired of XP, be it faster, more stable than Vista or not. This is bound to help Vista develop and I am looking forward to this new era.

I like your optimism. Honestly, give Vista a chance. Since adding it to my computer months ago, I hardly ever log into XP anymore.

Well I don't just say that - my experience with Vista wasn't all that bad. Even my low-budget laptop can run Aero very smoothly, and say what you like but I really like the interface (truth be told, there aren't many themes right now, but that'll change too). Also, another thing I liked was how it was meant to be user-friendly (not that I need it to be, but eh, it's nice to be polite and explain what everything does). The problem is, it's sometimes over-protective; the security and folder/file sharing is one of the worst things about this OS. With the SP1, the only other problems I can think of are incompatibility with older games. If there are others, they're minor IMO.

Still, I want to use my laptop mainly for those very things Vista can't run (or can but with tweaking which I honestly don't have the nerves to do): older games like Baldur's Gate or Gothic...

Anyway, XP is staying on this laptop, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't use Vista if I had a better one that could provide a more solid performance and play the next-gen games such as Crysis.

I'm a bit of a neat freak, never liked having more than one OS. Tried it, didn't work. Usually one gets neglected and I end up deleting that partition.

Heh, don't make me crave Aero. :p

Besides, I don't have the DVD, I only installed it from the one a friend got with his PC, so technically I had a 30 day trial version. Even if you could convince me to embrace the dual-boot religion it would be futile because I don't have Vista.

But US, Europe, ... are not emerging markets. And no full Windows XP pro will be available to ULCPC's either.

I've grown to like Vista. In particular, I feel that the Aero interface makes computing much smoother and aesthetically pleasing; you could work with it for hours.

Vista is getting easier to work with , looks good and provides close to XP performance.
    I was a big Vista hater, but I love SP1 :D

Lol, well I sure didn't respond to Vista that way the first time around. The GUI was actually very much improved imho. A lot cleaner too. The only thing that made me react negatively to it at first was how slow it ran.... but yeah, SP1 has definitely help change all that.

Still, I still feel sorry for people trying to run it with less than a gig of RAM.

I responded to it that way. I really did not like it at first - I tried to get my hands on a Win XP for my lappy, but they wanted to charge me 200 bucks for a disk that I technically already had - retail XP Pro. If i am going to keep Vista I want to go x64 edition. Already contacted the manufacturer of my computer to see if they will do so. They said in the near future - whatever that means.
