    Hi guys

Does anyone know how to remove the Windows XP Home Setup entry on the boot menu?

I've stupidly tried to "upgrade" XP Home - I was meaning to repair the OS but inserted the disc while I was still in XP and selected the "upgrade" option :banghead:

I've tried putting the disc in and going up to the point of doing a fresh install, but even cancelling that doesn't cancel the in-progress upgrade.

Problem is I can't complete the upgrade as it says there is a file missing, it has got to the stage of after the first reboot...

Any advice would be greatly appreciated as this is quite annoying and preferably I'd like to not have to do a complete re-install - I still have a fully functioning XP install, because I managed to solve the problem I was having without going through the "upgrade" procedure I started accidentally...

Thanks in advance for your help and advice :)

Try EasyBCD. A program that can edit your boot menu.

I can't recall exactly which files you'll want to delete (the installation files) but you'll need to fix the boot record regardless. Open up C:\boot.ini. It is hidden, so you need to unhide it. What does it say?

This is what mine says: (XP pro)

Or if you don't want to do that I would try going into the Recovery Console via the installation disk and type the command 'FIXMBR'.

Thanks Gregory_Is_Cheap, you put me on the right path.

I realised there is a boot.bak and a boot.ini, boot.bak being a backup of the boot.ini file so I just copied the contents from .bak to .ini and saved it.

All is good now, next time I think I'll reach for the discs when I'm slightly less tired and know what I'm doing... :D

    Thanks guys, much appreciated. :)
