Which one would you go personally? Right now, I am happy with Windows Vista. I tried Win 7 but really dont like the start menu. I was really into the classic start menu but they didnot kept that. Also, I didnot liked the explorers minimizing into the same tab. I was preety impressed with the speed and performance.Any things you are expecting or not expecting?

Id go with windows 7, seems like a solid OS, im sure you know why with all this info around. As for the windows minimizing, you can make them minimize like windows xp,vista.

Theres always the option to adapt or just tweak your way to the classic way :)

    Oh Boy here we go.

Anyhow, it is possible to go Retro and get the Classic Start menu in 7. You would have to use a third-party app though. Click! I haven't used it myself though. A simple google search led me to it.

And it is possible to have all your explorer/browser windows separated as XP did. Right click the taskbar and select Properties. Under the taskbar buttons section select Never combine and Apply.

    Anyways, 7 FTW!

Disable always combine feature for the taskbar and "explorers" won't be grouped in the same tab

If you know your way around Windows, Vista was much better than XP after SP2 was rolled out. That's a big IF though. After a few weeks on Windows 7 now, it's by far the best of the 3.

XP is a great OS really. But I vote go to Windows 7.
Vista is greater than XP. 7 is greater than Vista.
XP have a lot of security holes and bugs that the weak points but the performance is better(higher benchmark).
Vista have less security holes but performance is slightly weaker than XP(lower benchmark slightly).
7 have superior on everything. Windows 7 FTW!!

I voted Windows 7, though I currently am not using it.

Once officially released, I will be replacing Vista with it. I also will be building a desktop later this year based on Windows 7 Ultimate x64.

Before buying Win7, I would see all the benchmarks and other stuff. Also, what about that integrated virtual XP thing? If this is integrated then doesn't the files become huge and take more HDD also with a little longer installation time and some hiccups?

I used to swear by XP until I tried Windows 7. When your computer boots up faster than XP, runs all of your games much better, runs games perfectly that used to crash on XP, runs games that used to experience graphical glitches perfectly, is just as stable if not more stable than XP and is more up to date and can take advantage of newer hardware, there is no other choice.

I will never use XP again. Windows 7 is the only one for me to be using on my NP8662.

Windows XP came on my computer too, but I'm using Windows 7 RC, and I've pre-ordered the release version. In my experience, Windows 7 improves on Vista's looks, improves on XP's performance, and has better general usability than either of them.

Windows 7 FTW. But I reverted back to Vista as I don't like the face that they release a new RC build every few dates and the current keys are not able to acitvate it.....I dont like using cracks for OS activation either, not only is it illlegal. but it is a big hassle as MS usually always finds a way to combat it.

thus I am always 100% legal when it coems to OS or AV (running nod32 genuine 2 year license FTW)

I downloaded W7 but haven't installed since I away from home for the summer and don't have my back up external HDD. Not that there's anything wrong with this laptop as it serves all my needs, and is running fine, but I've been thinking of upgrading. I'll most likely wait until W7 comes with the new ones.

Windows XP is a pain in the butt installing drivers now. Windows Vista and 7 was more of a breeze. When I installed 7 on my mom's laptop, the only things not working without driver install were BT, the mic, and the fingerprint reader. On XP, I sent it to a shop, and they told me its hard to get the drivers.

Windows 7 is also my favorite cause it's not that resource-requiring (hogging is too much now in this time), and its a good upgrade from XP. The new interface, the XP-ish performance, and the improvements are good for me to upgrade

I'll only hang with Vista until all the drivers for my laptops and desktops are provided by the manufacturers.

This must be the most bewildering thing i've seen on the forum.

XP is a breeze with drivers...at least 32 Bit. Maybe you had XP 64 Bit Edition?

I totally agree with everything else you said though.

Windows 7 is more resource efficient version of Vista. Vista hogged the I/O of the hard drive relentlessly. Windows 7 also boots up a lot faster and thrashes the hard drive much less. I am still getting used to having to hold Shift + Left Click to open a new window on the taskbar with Windows 7.

XP was not that great at release IMHO because of the many bugs and security problems. XP became a lot better after SP2 was released however.

uhm, on a lot of actual hw, you won't find xp drivers, and that's what he ment. so no, if i want to install xp on an actual consumer laptop, it's no "breeze with drivers", not even 32bit.

an original xp disk doesn't even start up really as it doesn't have the required drivers to find the hdd, if it defaults to ahci mode, f.e.

Okay, I think after reading over the post I understand. Basically XP is a pain in the **yea** to install? Yea you don't have to tell me that twice. I've had to install/re-install XP one too many times in my lifetime so I understand the pain; esp. the time it takes to get it set up and running. :(

But when talking about availability XP drivers are not really that hard to find. At least if you want to find them. So those folks at the shop MisterQ were just being lazy. :p

I didn't vote in the poll since it's convoluted IMO. I'm looking forward to W7 when it's released in October. All my laptops are now running Vista instead of XP. It's much better than it was when released.

The only exception is my gaming rig and that runs XP. Hopefully W7 will change that. :)

XP was great.....in 2002-2005. Now, while it gets the job done, it looks and feels dated. Not to mention, if your not on top of things security wise, you can cause quite a mess....

Vista was pretty good IMO, and i used it pre SP1. It got a bad rap for it's high requirements but after the SP's it got better for many people. The security and fresh, modern look, made the difference for me. :)

W7 though...is awesome. I switched and never looked back. It "feels" a tad faster than Vista, it looks more refined. And the little touches like the new taskbar, jump lists, and window snapping, make it easy to do stuff. :)

I'm excited for Windows 7! :) Seeing as they might have a family pack, I might actually refresh all 6 of my desktops at home to Windows 7(never upgraded them from XP to Vista because it cost an arm >.>)

But yeah, Windows 7 is really nice I find! As others have said, Vista is good and XP gets things done as long as you know what you're doing in terms of security :D All are good OSes really lol

Either XP or Win7, and since XP is old and creaky, I vote Win7. Of course, I still like to point out that Linux offers the same functionality at a lower hardware footprint, but at least Win7 is more advanced (like Vista), and tightened up and running somewhat efficiently (unlike Vista).

The interface and compatibility of Win7 advance it beyond XP, but I confess I like the hackability of XP, rather than the inscrutable architecture of Vista and Win7.

I used to be an XP diehard but after switching to Vista (Business 32) a few weeks back with a new machine I can see just how tired and old XP had become.

Having said that, I find Vista a little weird. Sort of half-baked. Fast enough and trouble-free once tuned, yes. But logical and intuitive to use? Definitely not. Maybe that's just cuz I'm not used to it.

I've not tried Windows 7 RC but I will jump on my free upgrade come October. Hopefully Win7 will fix some of the more confusing Vista omissions and behaviours and make tuning less of a requirement.

I'm an XP fan. Or, you could say, and entrenched XP user. Vista and Win7 have both given me lesser compatibility with my favorite games, as well as lower performance. Sure, they have a few nice interface features, such as the search bar on the Control Panel, but the benefits are outweighed by compatibility problems for me.

My current project is seeing if I can get XP 64-bit running well. Drivers have been surprisingly easy to come by, just a bit worse than XP 32-bit. Win7 takes the crown, of course, but XP 64 isn't bad. Then again, I do have a Dell - I'm not sure I'd have the same luck with an HP, Toshiba, or Sony. Dell tends to be much better about having XP, and even some Linux, drivers available than those vendors.

I had Win7 RC installed for awhile, but found I still prefer XP. I'd been curious to see if XP Mode might be the magic trick necessary for a transition, but found instead that it still needs some BSOD-causing bugs ironed out. So, while I could switch to Vista for free, and could easily afford Win7 (or run the RC free for awhile), instead I'll be happily running XP until at least mid-2011.

which does not give back any of the features i love about the vista / xp taskbar at all. au contraire, it still has all of them messed up.

the only "gain" of switching is, getting the text labels back. other than that, it's still utterly missbehaved.

still, people will love it. good for microsoft. they don't even have to follow their own usability guidelines anymore :)

Win7 easy. Putting it on my laptop was as easy as pie - it found drivers and worked right out of the box. And the UI...oh what a glorious UI. It's good enough to give Apple a run for its money.

I've grown so used to jump lists, i don't know what i'll do without them.

Indeed, while there are many people (esp. on here) who have used Vista, tried it for quite a bit, and found that they just worked better on XP, there are still many people who refuse to touch it. My coworker for example, bought a netbook as a primary computer....why? Because she "heard" bad things from friends about Vista, and wanted XP.
