Seems I've managed to screw up XP again!

My old trusty scanner is giving me issues for the first time. It seems that the PC can't load the driver, and uninstalling/reinstalling using the original CD that came with it isn't fixing the problem either. FYI, I have the Canon CanoScan LiDE 60 USB scanner.

I've tried Driver Cleaner Pro, a good registry scrub, and a couple of restarts to no avail. I'm going to clean through the drivers and cabs in safe mode on the next reboot, so I'll be back after that.

But I'm not too sure what caused the problem, nor how to fix it if my next reboot fails to solve the problem. Any suggestions? I really don't want to reformat this machine already.

    Thanks guys!

UPDATE: Reboot, Driver Cleaner Pro, and a software update failed to fix it.

Have you tried uninstalling the current drivers/bloatware that came with your cannon, and then insering the Driver CD that came with your Canon, going to device manager, selecting your scanner on the list, clicking the update driver button and selecting the CD as the place to search?

I have had this problem before, and i found the only real way to fix it is to remove the device in device manager (with the red 'X') and then reboot. When the computer restarts you should be able to use the CD to specify the drivers. I never install with the auto run application that comes with many driver CDs and i find i have better success. If you need the application that is on the cd i would manually browse through the CD and find its executable.

    Hope this helps!

Has it worked under XP before? Older scanners and such tend to have problems if they don't have the drivers updated. Enabled NX support lately? Many badly written drivers will not work with that enabled. Which is basically all Windows drivers.

That's exactly what I did. For some reason Windows isn't removing references to the first driver (the one that got screwed up).

Fortunately, this CD doesn't come with bloatware (or at least you can choose to uninstall it). For some reason when I try to manually update the drivers it cannot find them on the CD.

Oh yeah. It was built for XP, and the scanner line itself is about two years old. I used it four days ago without a problem!

Would a program like Driver Cleaner Pro mess it up?

UPDATE: It appears that several more drivers are also missing or corrupt. Now I need to know if DCP could have done this. But a reformat might be the only thing that can fix my machine now... :(

Yup. I have the driver uninstall utility and run it to no avail. I also downloaded and installed the latest software and drivers from that same website. I'm starting to think that it doesn't get all the files though.

BTW, it gets worse...I tried to Ghost the hard drive back to about a week ago when things were still working, and now the PC refuses to boot. I'm going to try to save this for a little while longer then I might just have to reformat.

At this point I'm just starting to wonder if DCP (or another program) would have caused this issue. Because if I can find the culprit, I'm never going to use those files again.

Have you tried plugging it one a different PC to see it that works? Tried to install uninstall in safe mode?
