    Windows copies files wrong...

    I helped my friend recover data from her dead laptop the other day, all she wanted was her photos. So I pulled the HDD from her old laptop, placed in my laptop and then copied the photos to my HDD. Then she gave me her new computer, a Toshiba running 7, (my laptop and her old one run Vista), and I used my external HDD to transfer all her photos from my HDD to her new laptop. Now all the photos on her new computer say "copy" for a name and are not real photos...please help, I don't have the backup of her photos on my computer anymore and I haven't looked at her old one to see if they're still there.

    Unless the old one has had any use on it, it should still have the files.

    This shouldn't have been a problem, as I've done major file transfers w/o issue. Try it again. This time, move only ONE file over and see how it behaves. If successful, then a small group. Etc...

    Sorry, I'm getting ahead of myself. I haven't actually seen that the files are not photos, this is just what she tells me over the phone, I just want to go to her armed. I'm confused because I remember that transferring the files took an appropriate amount of time, so for them not to work is weird.

    two questions

    1) how did you copy them, drag and drop? Copy Paste? Right click left click?

    2) what was the format of the picture format?

    Maybe the pics are in an odd format and she does not have the correct program to open them? Maybe you created shortcuts instead of copying files?

    In addition to Gerry's advice, ask her to check the file size of some individual photos. It would likely be easiest if you could post a screenshot of the properties view, as well as whatever error message pops up when she tries to open one.

    Also, to give you and her some piece of mind, the original data is likely still recoverable from her old drive and your external using programs such as Recuva and Photorec. Photorec should work even if the drive as already been formatted... Though it's not as nice as Recuva since it will recover without folder structure and file names. However, that may not even be necessary. first thing is to find out if the copies are actually corrupt or not.
