There is been a while since I have noticed that Windows built in defragment software on my laptop behaves strange. When I press to analyze it suddenly jumps fro 0% to 43% and it stays there for a long time and then it gives a suggestion whether I should start or not. I was wondering if anyone experiencing the same, and what could be the reason that it is behaving like this.
-
its most probably the empty parts of the disk that it jumps by.
get a ssd then you will neve have to worry about defraggin again
-
Now that you mention ssd, I have been thinking for it a while but not sure my laptop supports it or has space enough for it.I have an Acer 5750G.
-
if this is your laptop then yes it can take a ssd Acer Aspire 5750G WD10JPVT HDD vs. Crucial M4 SSD - YouTube
hard drive
5400rpm 35-45 secods boot
7200rpm 25-30 seconds boot
ssd (mine below) 12 seconds boot and the samsung 840 pro is even faster -
Yes that is the same laptop I have, is it possible to keep the existing one as backup and add a SSD to boot Windows from? Do you think there is enough space in it?
-
im not sure how acer work but if they do the same as my clevo then you can change the disc drive with a caddy and put the normal hard drive in there and a ssd inside.
as its a 15" it might be better to get the largest drive you can afford. my 512gb has come down quite a lot in price now. -

Which version of Windows are you using? I never had the problem you experienced. I left my computer to auto defrag itself and never got that message? -
I recommend checking out a third party defrag software. I have had good experience with defraggler seems a lot faster than the windows built in one, and it's free.

By that logic windows defrag program is free and part of the O/S since it comes with windows itself. One should let it do the defrag at idle to not use so much CPU time or it seems the user isn't waiting to let the computer defrag itself before using thus forcing the CPU to work overtime to finish the task that should be left alone to complete then go about doing your computing business. And "defraggler" where the link to it? And "Seems to be faster" doesn't give a accurate accounting on how it really performs the task. That will require many task and many test to test otherwise. -
+1 degraggler
free, no-ads, compact, no-install (portable), support 32bit and 64bit environment!
I only use it on my HDD, but not SSD, heard that defrag a SSD will harm it ...... donno if it is true or not, but I don't wanna prove that anyway..... -

Personally, I prefer Auslogics disk defrag, though the integrated Windows defrag gets the job done in any case.
@maro - see if a third party utility gives you the same grief or not. It could be Windows related, or possibly drive related. Using alternate software will help you narrow it down, and you may even end up favoring whatever program you use over Windows defrag tool. -
You can get it here https://www.piriform.com/defraggler same people who makes CCleaner. I have no extensive testing or data to show that it's faster than the built in. Such test would be hard to accomplish without re-imaging the hard drive, do a defrag, restore image and do another defrag with different software. In my person experience defraggler does work faster, but YMMV.

i second auslogic's defragger. imho better than windows built in
but i also second mr djs suggestion on the ssd. i was sceptical at first but its one of the best upgrades you can get your laptop. -
i recommend this defrag freeware: JkDefragGUI + JkDefrag de

I just let windows do its defragging and so far haven't had any problems in my daily usage and running of my apps.
-
I have tried a couple of other programs to see the differences, but none of them behaved the way windows built in defrager did. However I am a bit surprised to see this behavior and I am not sure if the job gets down properly by any programs, especially when you mention that you don't see this issue on your laptop.
