Hi! My Windows folder in my drive C seems to take up a huge amount of hard drive space. It's size is 12gb! I'm sure there's a virus somewhere but I can't seem to find it! I already tried running Kaspersky, AVG and McAfee but they all say that nothing is wrong with my drive.

    Please help me!

    Thanks!

Is it Vista? If yes, it is probably normal, and by the way viruses don't take up multiple Gbs, they are a couple of Mbs at max.

How much of your harddrive is reserved for system restore? I think the default is 12% of the volume.

That's the problem, if i manually highlight all the files and folders in C:/Windows, it only adds up to 5 GIG and not the size it claims...

Download Folder Size for XP, read the instructions, and make sure you have the view hidden files and folders setting checked in Control Panel -> Folder Options to see which folder is taking up the most space.

The pagefile is 1.5 times the RAM size by default.
Use ExplorerXP, an alternative for Windows Explorer that shows folder size.

The /winsxs folder uses more than 3 GB alone in VU32.

System Restore is not the culprit. It stores its files in C:\Volume Settings Information (which is hidden by default). The IE cache also is not in the C:\Windows folder, at least not by default. You can check where it is by going to IE, then Tools--> Internet Options, then (under the Temporary Internet Files section) Settings, and then clicking "View Folder" and looking at the address bar. If it is in C:\Windows, it could be the culprit.

Check out /windows/winsxs/ , it is very large, most likely over 6 GB on your system.

The Winsxs folder includes all manifests, optional components and 3rd party Win32 files.

The files in %windir%\system32 are hard links to the winsxs directory.

Have you installed a lot of software....??
