My laptop has been crashing unexpectedly these past few days, including one stint where the taskbar changed into a kind of white classic style but I was still in Aero everywhere else. I had gotten notifications of a problem with a host process, and that Windows was working on a solution.
Today I boot up and Windows Problem Reports And Solutions tells me:
-----
Run the Norton AntiVirus / Symantec AntiVirus (SAVRT.sys) tool to fix this problem
This problem was caused by Norton AntiVirus / Symantec AntiVirus (SAVRT.sys). Norton AntiVirus / Symantec AntiVirus (SAVRT.sys) was created by Symantec Corporation.
To solve this problem, you will need to run the automatic update tool that comes with Norton AntiVirus / Symantec AntiVirus (SAVRT.sys).

The thing is, I don't have Norton Antivirus. I did when I first got the laptop, because it came with a trial version, but I reinstalled Vista and got rid of it.
I use ZoneAlarm Security Suite 7 for my antivirus needs.
Anyone have an idea as to what's going on?
-
When you reinstalled vista, did you format your drive and start fresh, or did you just reinstall over the existing installation? -
I partitioned the HD for Dell MediaDirect, then popped in the reinstallation CD. I'm not sure which one that is, but I've been looking for any traces of Norton, and can't find any.
-
Have you run the Norton Removal Tool?
-
Go to the Start menu and type "reliability" and click enter. This will start the reliability and performance monitor. In the left column click on Monitoring Tools and them Reliability Monitor.
Look in the rows under the graph for red circles with an "X". Clicking on those will tell you which application or program file has an error, what type it is, an when it happened.
Check that and see exactly what the problem is and report back. -

Windows Failure
Type: OS Stopped Working
Version:6.0.6000
Failure Detail: 0x0000009f
This exact same failure happened two days before that date, and the day before, the failure detail for the OS Not Working was 0x000000c2 -
When you re-installed did you do a clean install or did you use recovery DVD that came with the computer and uninstall Norton?
-
I used the installation CD - that would be a clean install, since all unnecessary programs, were gone.
-
Both those errors relate to driver problems. Are you sure you have the latest drivers installed?
-
I ran the Norton removal tool, but recently I've noticed that there is a different kind of error: 0xc2 bad_pool_caller, which is a driver issue.
Windows also identified this as a savrt.sys error, and again recommended a Norton update. -
i would try to install norton, run the update, and then UN.install norton
cheers ...
Windows identifies Norton Antivirus problem, but Norton is not installed on my comp
