I just got a new laptop, and my mother would like to start using my old desktop.
However, she can only understand chinese, so would i have to buy a "chinese xp"? (I already have the english version of XP Pro)
how much would it cost?

If you have XP Pro, doesn't it support multiple languages, including a CJK set? Couldn't you just install XP Pro on the desktop & switch over to Chinese?

you have to buy the chinese version of XP.

Would you not need a Chinese keyboard as well?

Couple o' things:
1) Depends on what your Mom wants to do with the computer. While it's true that CJK character sets require double byte characters (as compared to most western languages that use single byte characters), if she's only gonna be doing simple stuff like web surfing, occasional e-mails & what not, couldn't you just install the Pinyin IME? Check out:

for a further explanation or just Google "XP Pro Chinese"
2) While having a Chinese keyboard would defo be handy, it's not necessary thanks to IME. For example, I run Japanese Win XP home and have a Japanese keyboard w/ the handy little button that lets me switch between roman characters (the alphabet) and Japanese characters (hiragana, katakana or kanji), but w/ IME, you can do the same thing via the software. Pain in the wazoo sometimes, sure, but via this route, I was able to read my Japanese e-mail back home in the US over Christmas on my parents' English Win XP desktop.
Windows in other languages?
