IMHO, avoid it! Lots of bloatware
-
In today's world of super fast computers, multi gigs of RAM and huge HDD's, if the program is well written, is "bloatware" still a concern?
-
This release is not even close to being final and ready for the public. So many little things wrong with it, so I decided to uninstall it and revert to Version 2009... no biggier, right?!
I uninstall it, and it asks me to restart my computer (what is this, 1998?)... anyways, after I restart and I try to log into my account, it says my user account is corrupted and it can't log me in!
I didn't install anything else recently (other than WLM 2011) and it worked fine before. I had to go into safe mode and use ReProfiler to correct the problem. Now my user account is fine but I'm using WLM 2009 again.
Seriously, did Microsoft just dump all the inexperienced programmers into the Windows Live team?! This must be a joke. -
i haven't had single problem with windows live messenger 2011 since beta
-
actually this release of windows live messenger a lot faster and a lot lighter than 2009
-
The good thing about it is that it let's you choose what to install.I personally have installed windows live messenger and the movie maker.I had no problems with them.
-
Let me see, I have a car that can carry 2 people and costs $1 per mile. The common sense based on that is to replace it with another car that can carry 2 people as well but costs $3 per mile. (@Reconstructed no idea why you believe its lighter since opening WLM overall you use more memory at the moment. Except ofcourse if you only take the messenger~.exe in account and not the other 3-4 .exe's that are running to support messenger to run.)
On to facts. I chose custom installation, for windows mail and messenger.
1)You get a new service (windows microsoft live id something) which you cant disable or else you cant login into msn or windows live mail.
2) Silverlight installs itself (even when its not really needed) without having an option for in the installation.
3) The new service keeps 2 .exe files running (the older version has none).
4) Lots of extra unnecessary files get dropped into your system, I actually had all the "writer" module files ready in programs files even without choosing it.
That's only a few things I can think on top of my head which i noticed within 3 minutes after installing this, I'm pretty sure I even forgot to mention some. And something extra which shouldn't affect everyone and has the potential to be fixed. The new gui that windows live mail has conflicts with fraps causing it to show 3+ fps counts in the mail program. -
I don't think bloatware is a problem in WLM2011, it's much lighter than WLM2009, don't be so scared, just update...
-
no problems here, been using the beta for months
-
I'm installing only WLM 2011... lets see whats new with that...
-
Nothing good, that's for sure.
-
Before someone starts complaining about the new big bloated interface, try click on the "compact view" button, to see the old WLM interface...
I know it's obvious, but some people miss it... -
when are they going to remove that ridiculously annoying ad at the bottom, bundling ads with programs is so last decade
-
I had only WLM 2009 installed and when I downloaded the setup.exe, I chose to update WLM to 2011 and not install any other programs, and then the next day I uninstalled it and rebooted my laptop, mainly because it screwed up my convo histories I save. That's when I couldn't sign into my laptop at all whatsoever.
I had to restore my laptop to an earlier point before updating since the solution I tried earlier didn't solve the problem. I'm sticking with WLM 2009 for a while. -
Then AVG and AntiVir are stuck in the last decade, because they do it as well.
-
I just installed it... and my god this is the ugliest, most cluttered UI I've ever seen! My god, this is terrible! Why is the messenger window so freaking huge!?! And Mail gets that stupid unusable ribbon? >.< I need to at least fix the messenger issue...
EDIT: Well, messenger was easy to fix, but I still hate that ribbon on Mail. -
That is exactly why I posted the solution earlier... people get scared by the big interface, when all they have to do is click one button
-
Messenger is still taking up a good 50MB of RAM, compared to AIM's 37-38MB. Not exactly light, I would say, but a little better I think.
-
You are worrying about 12MB of memory? Seriously?
-
Neither is all that light, IMO.
Also, it's now up to 58MB. So long as this fixes the problem where the old version froze and sent my CPU into 100% load, causing temps to soar, I guess I shouldn't complain. Still, I don't like how cluttered Mail looks, and I can't figure out how to change my screen name in Messenger. -
Thanks for the heads up!
-
I agree. That is nothing to worry about. 60MB takes up less than 1% on a 6GB system...
-
Windows Live Mesh is probably the most worthwhile tool if you have many computers...
-
I was about to add the point that it leaks memory like crazy, but then I took a look and saw that it somehow only takes up 18MB minimized. Now I'm just going to give up trying to figure this thing out.
I still need to find a way to change my screen name, though. Don't tell me I have to change my first and last names on my profile...
