How do i switch off the sound that windows plays when you log on??

If you have Vista, I don't know. But for other versions go to the Control Panel. Then open "Sounds and Audio Devices" click on the "Sounds" tab. Towards the bottom there is a list of "Program events" scroll down till you find what you want to get rid of or change. Under that there is a box where you can select what you want. If you want to change it you can select a new one, if you want to disable one just go to the very top of that list and pick "(None)".

In Vista -
type sound into the start search line
Click on the Sound icon
The Sound control window will open
Click on the Sounds tab
Click on the "Play Windows Startup Sound" to unselect it
Personally, I used that menu to select (none) for nearly all of the system sounds. I find most of the sounds are just annoying. Besides, every time the system makes a sound, it needs to access the sound card and this slows things down.
I particularly hate the Start Navigation sound. I don't need to hear a "click" every time I select something. -
In my Vaio once I disabled power MGR I lost the startup music/shutdown music. Not that I care. Saved me 20mb of RAM. I enable it when I need to be portable.
