starter doesn't have media center right? starter should just not exist :)

mpc can use tv tuners, but is not particularly nice to use with it. the usb tuner should have it's own software, which should be nice to use (but doesn't have to be, i've seen ugly beasts). there are other media centers out there. xbmc comes to mind. originally xbox media center, nowadays available for ordinary pc's. no clue if that supports tv tuners (i use windows media center), but i guess so. it's free, so trying doesn't cost.

vlc sure can handle it, too, somehow.. :)

no, so far, i haven't had the need yet. i've seen that there are tools existing for that, but never tried one.

MCEBuddy > Home should be able to do it.

it can't for legality reasons. else, microsoft would not have been allowed tuner-access (or something).

+ the wtv format holds more information than a wmv or avi (all audio channels of all languages, subtitles and more information)

media center could do much more. but microsoft is not the big player in this business. the tv business is.

I am converting a 13.3 GB video at such a glacial place that I expect it will just be finishing this time tomorrow.
