Hi,
I have been using Avast as my anitvirus for 3 months. Today, the Windows security center tells me that windows cannot detect any antivirus software on my computer and that windows defender is turned off (spyware protection). Now I have done no changes to my computer since the last time I have turned it off. Last night everything was fine, and all I did with my computer is take a few pictures. I am rather sure this is not a problem with Avast, but with windows (since I cannot seem to turn on the windows defender, even when I try it only tries to update and tells me everything is updates, but the message that it is turned off remains).
Does anyone know how to fix this problem. It amazes me how a routine operation can generate problems. Thanks

Have you tried to reboot?
-
well yes... I have tried to reboot. I've also done a bit of research and found its a (somewhat) common problem. But the proposed solution (to repair the WMI repository) does not work for me; my WMI repository is not corrupt. I was just hoping by posting here that some other users had some experience with the problem and knew a solution.

Did you install your reg code? You may have hit your time limit and Avast is no longer active. You should have seen some nag windows complaining about registration.
-
yeah I registered it. I really think its simply Windows. Avast still runs... so the only problem really seems this annoying secuirty message. I just want to understand why it happens now, and how to fix it (without simply overiding the secuirty center).

Try googling. A similar issue happened to me with PC tools firewall. You have to delete the wsc memory files somewhere. I forgot that. I will get back later about this.

I have finally found a solution, and is indeed a vista bug. In case someone else has the same problem one day, the trick that work for me is the following:
symptoms :
In the Comp. mgmt > Services and Apps > WMI Control Properties:
Failed to initialize all required WMI classes.
Win32_Processor: Win32: Access is denied
Win32_WMISetting: Successful
Security information: Successful
Win32_OperatingSystem: Win32: Access is denied
Solution:
>>Right click "Computer"
>>Click "Manage"
>>Under the "System Tools" section, Double click "Local Users and Groups"
>>Click "Groups"
>>Right click "Administrators"
>>Click "Add to group..."
>>Click "Add"
>>Click "Advanced"
>>Click "Find Now"
>>Double click "Local Service"
>>Click "Ok"
>>"NT Authority\Local Service" should show up in the list now
>>Click "Ok"
>>Close Computer Management and reboot.

if you installed aim 6.5, it causes an error where it won't recognize the anti-virus software. the newest version for some reason had a worm in it that made this occur. if you search around, you can find ways to change it. the safest way is system restore, but the less safe way is the latter that Duchesne posted.
Windows no longer recognizes Avast...
