Hey, I'm very interested in using Linux, but i have only one concern...will i still be able to do the occasional gaming every now and then? I want to be able to play sc2, oblivion, wc3, and perhaps some crysis. if i have all the needed hardware, can i still do this? thanks

You have two options here.
1. Try running these titles under Cedega... tricky to set up and doesn't support all titles.
2. Install linux alongside Windows ("dual boot") and choose which OS you want at boot time.
Option 2 is easiest to set up... most linux distros can allocate space for linux from your Windows partition and set up the boot loader during the initial install. -
Dual booting really is the best option. Demanding games like Oblivion and Crysis are not supported until months after their release.
Unfortunately, if your primary concern is new gaming, you'll need Windows installed. Hopefully this situation will change in a few years though. -
Unless you are interested in trying out the 3D graphic system of linux, there is a number of thing that you can try which makes your concern a non-issue :
virtualbox or vmplayer allows you to install linux and run most of its program(GUI based included) all under Windows. The only thing I don't like is that they seem to have some problems with the clock when I sleep/hibernate Windows(the clock skewed), at least with vmplayer.
I run colinux which don't have the mentioned clock skew problem but that is a little bit harder to setup as it requires a customized kernel.
XP + ubuntu GNOME can run concurrently and smoothly on a 2.8Ghz/1G RAM P4(well the P4 sucks).
Windows to Linux concern...
