I could not use windows update on my vista laptop and it kept telling me the same error code number. I searched the number and found a bunch of ways to possibly fix it. The problem might have been caused by some other windows update. I tried to install a new verison of the updater but got the same error message. Then i download yet another update that said it might fix my error message thing. I didn't get any confirmation that it worked but the little power in start said to restart and install updates and I clicked it.

NOW, my computer starts the configing update screen stays at 0% and restarts again. It is in an endless cycle of resarting. I haven't been able to boot using safe mode and disabling auto restart didn't do anything. What can i do?

You can try putting in your Vista reinstall disk, head to Repair Your Computer and do a System Restore from there or delete files through command prompt.

Is it hold down f10 when booting. I can't remember for sure its one of those 8-9-10?? I had to do that when I had problems you can then pick a restore point.

Personally, I don't really trust windows update so I leave it on manual update. I don't let it automatically update since it has killed my computer twice already with updates that causes this blue screen of death to appear and trap my laptop in a endless reboot sequence....

I think that is what I used to go to a previous restore pt. Unfortunetly without seeing it I don't remember. If you don't have it I can get you sony tech that can walk you through it tomorrow.

I can't get other advice but to reinstall vista. How did you restore thorugh f10?

Ok if i have to reinstall vista, how can i recover my data? Get a external hard drive then what, usb doesn't work does it. Do i switch hard drives reinstall vista into the new one then copy the old data into the new drive inside the computer then switch hard drives and repeat. I am being dumb and there is an easier way?

edit.- i have esata too if that helps

    Safe mode is not working...

    DISREGARD THIS POST- solved

i download a vista repair cd and booted from it. It has an option for system restore but it says to perform an offline System Restore i need to "specify which windows installation i would like to restore.
Then it says that if the installation located in C:\Windows should be restored, enter this command "rstrui.exe /OFFLINE:C:\Windows"

I enter that command in the command prompt after "X:\Sources>" but it says that no restore points exist on the disk. How is that? What is the default place vista puts restore points?
