I've been using Vista for over a year now and have just recently run in to the problem of not being able to install the updates. I typically use a vLite Vista Ultimate Dell OEM install, but when I reformatted and found that the updates no longer work, I reformatted with Vista Business to find that the updates wouldn't install there either. So back on my Ultimate and no luck again.

When I try to update after a fresh reformat, it finds 49 updates to install. After downloading installing, rebooting and checking for new updates, it says I still have 29 or so updates to install and my list of installed updates if filled with failed updates. I've tried updating again, and that doesn't get them to work either.

What's interesting, though, is that when asked to reboot after the 49 updates have "installed" it takes about an hour or so for my computer to go through the process of shut down (configure updates), reboot (configure updates), reboot again (configure updates), load desktop (updates failed).

    Any thoughts?

Try installing them in small groups. You may find that most install fine, and just one or a few have problems, which can a whole bunch fail.

SP1 should remedy this problem as ALL updates and hotfixes up until SP1 release are included.

Just make sure you have the SP1 pre-reqs and just wait until SP1 if all else fails.

Are you running a firewall? I found this problem too and when i disabled comodo, they all installed fine.

No firewall but Windows firewall. SP1 won't install on this OEM vLite version of Windows, so I'll probably have to go back to my Business install to get SP1, but that crawls compared to my trimmed down Ultimate!

I'll try installing in smaller batches. Thanks for the replies.

That worked perfectly. There was one bad egg update (KB935509, Important, 1/22/2008) that would ruin everything else it tried to install with. All is well now, save for that update, but I'm not complaining.

This could be a driver issue. I had a similar problem on a desktop - I had to disable the Vista wireless drivers, otherwise I would have problems with lock-ups and updates not installing. You might want to try disabling anything that has a MS driver, then install the manufacturer driver, then try to update.

Yep, that's a required update to get SP1. You could do a Vista business install, go into audit mode, then install SP1, sysprep it, then use imagex to turn that into an install.wim file. There's plenty of steps but once you have a Vista Business with SP1, you can vlite that to a slim install.

goofball, please expand. I know how I can get SP1 in Business (I think, unless KB935509 will fail on Business, too), but how can I get the SP1 onto a Business image which I can slim down with vLite? And what's audit mode? Finally, is SP1 officially released, or is it still in RC?

Cool thanks for the link. I'll give that a shot tonight or tomorrow. But I have one quick question, first:

As I have dual booted my Ultimate and Business before, I've always run in to the issue that once a new version is installed (in this case, it would be my Business install), the computer automatically boots to that version without the option of booting in to the primary install (in this case Ultimate). It specifically says "Do NOT boot in to Vista," which I assume means the new version, so to keep that from happening, would I have to pop in my Vista Ultimate disk again and boot with that to repair my installs to give me the option of what Vista to boot?

Oh, I lied, I said I had one question, but I have two. Second, where do I get Windows6.0-KB936330-X86-wave0.exe that the guide says is the SP1 installer and where would I put it? Presumably on a flash drive, I'd guess.

If you get the SP1 from MSDN, it should be all included.

I'm not 100% sure about your first question, I did all this using virtual machines so I would have completely clean and independent OS'es to do what I needed to.

Thanks again for telling me how to do this. I contacted my MSDNAA program and they told me there are no SP1 discs, so I slipstreamed one myself and then vLited it way down. It runs perfectly!
