What does it mean when windows doesn't boot and I receive the following message:
Yukon PXE V 6.15.1
(C) 20070328 copywiright 2003-2006 Marvell CR
All rights reserved
Pre boot execution environment CPXE V 2 .1 copywiright 1997-2000
Intel OPXE Corporation v.2.1
Media test failure - check cable
Exiting PXE Rom
Does this simply mean that a necessary cable has gone loose inside the laptop? Or could it possibly be software related (would a chkdsk or repair be helpful?). Thanks.

Are you trying to netboot the machine? If I recall correctly (which I may not), that message indicates that the machine tried to find a network boot server and failed. Check your boot order in the BIOS, is the machine now set up to boot only from a network server?
The other possibility is that your hard drive is bad. Does the BIOS recognize that a hard drive is installed? If you insert a bootable OS disk like Windows, does it recognize any drives? If not, check your drive connections. If those are sound, it may simply be that the hard drive broke down. -
Yep, it means that your computer cannot find a bootable CD, floppy or harddrive, so it is trying to boot to the network.
This is a useful feature if you have an RIS server with windows images on it...you can install Windows without any CD/DVD.
Your harddrive could be dead or disconnected. If your boot order is messed up, windows would still try everything else before finally failing. -

Thanks so much for the info, I'll check in and report back later.
BTW, in system recovery, the computer fails to find any Windows installations. -

First, start with TestDisk...TestDisk can attempt to rebuild the MBR or recovery a lost partition.
If that fails, then consider other options. -

Try booting up your notebook in BIOS mode by pressing f1, f2, del or the assigned key leads you to a black or blue screen. Check if your BIOS display a memory in MB or GB and see if it matches your hard disk' memory. If no memory was detected like displaying 0MB or 0GB, then it simply means that your hard drive crashed just like what happened to me. If that's the case, you have to purchase a new hard disk (IDE for old notebooks, SATA, eSATA, or SSD).

Another option is to insert your Windows installation disc upon boot up to run a disc check where you will be asked, in a blue screen, to repair or format your hard disk. Choose repair, any repairable defects will be solved. Those irreparable errors will also be displayed, respectively. From that, we can have the prognosis of your notebook's problem.
