My friend has an HP pavillion dv5000 laptop onto which he had installed Windows Vista, but wanted to go back to Windows xp. The Windows XP install, however, does not recognize the hard drive being there. We were able to install Ubuntu on it, but windows xp just refuses to recognize the hard drive. Any ideas?

I think you need a driver for the hard disk controller. It will be hard to do. Either you need to include the driver on the Windows CD or use a floppy drive and the driver on disk and press F6 at the setup start.
There are guides only how to include the driver on a windwos install cd. Search for Slipstreaming windows setup.
