I was strolling through my Windows folder earlier and noticed winsxs was over 10gb. Is everything in that folder vital? and why are half the subfolders titled amd64_ when I'm running an Intel C2D. Any help/comments are helpful :)

It doesn't use as much extra disk space as Windows makes it seem, since most stuff in other \Windows\ subfolders are just hard links to the winsxs files. At least that's my understanding. See here for more info: http://www.winvistaclub.com/f16.html

Anyway, I would not delete stuff under winsxs... or you risk some things mysteriously not working.

As for the "amd64"... since AMD came out with 64-bit extensions to x86 before Intel did... and they called it AMD64... some techies just call that cpu architecture AMD64. So... "amd64" is just another name for "x64"... same thing, different names.

some personal research on winsxs might be useful. Also, you do know that the 64 bit intel cpus run the AMD64 instruction set, don't you?

is your hard drive 'full' or is it just that this particular folder in the OS operating / install tree somehow offends you?

Never, EVER manually delete things from /windows without knowing EXACTLY what you are doing.

I thought that folder was symlinked to various files on the HDD and they aren't actually in the folder.

Yeh I did some personal research but I value NBR opinions beyond misc. tech blogs. Thanks for the help, I found out what I needed more or less

And never, ever manually delete things from the windows folder if you THINK you know exactly what you are doing either............. :)
