Running Word 2010 in Win7x64, whenever I open a Word attachment in an Outlook email, the system interface slows down to a crawl. Clicking on any window or taskbar button to bring the associated application to the foreground results in a delay of several seconds before the window pops up. The issue goes away if I click the "Enable editing" button on the Word attachment I had opened. Does anybody know a fix for this (other than disabling Protected View, that is)?

Try this. Let me know how you go.

    1. Browse to the following location: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office 12 (or C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14)
    2. Locate the file winword.exe or winword
    3. Right click on the file and then select the Properties option
    4. Click on the Compatibility tab
    5. Uncheck the ‘Run this program in compatibility mode for’ and ‘Run this program as an administrator’ options > Apply > OK

None of these options are checked. Why would they? These should not be checked on any standard installation, or am I missing something?

I had this problem earlier and doing this helped me solve the issue.

    I'll look for more options....

Nevermind; it turned out that the issue was the old version of EndNote (X1) that I was using. Upgraded to X4, and the issue is gone.
