Edit: Look's like Google has plans on making an OP!
http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/07/introducing-google-chrome-os.html
I am just curious on how many people would use a Google OS if it came out?
Anyone else?
Edit: Google OS = Google Operating System

hmm i can't decided because i don't know what a Google OS is, explain :]
-
i don't think google's os would be any good.

Google's OS would be compatible with only Google's services, since they make everything. Furthermore, GOS would cache all user data and record all patters of usage in order to further improve services while also making your data available to the world to search (of course, all for the purposes of advancing the frontiers of knowledge). GOS would also be in beta for the next 20 years and occasionally claim that the entire internet would harm the computer.
-
Only if it's Windows Compatible. >_>
Or has replacement apps. -
I would. Google is cute and fuzzy
. Android is proof of that
.

Like Windows OS = Windows Operating System
I.E; Windows XP, Windows Vista, etc

i have a 100% working fast, stable system. why should i switch? because of curiosity. but that's not enough, as i want to have familiarity with my system, which i only really have with windows (and a bit with mac os').
i prefer to stay in my environment. a google os could not give me anything my current system doesn't as well. same as linux can't, nor apple. so why should i switch again?
i'd try it out on a vm just for fun. but that's about it.
the only reason to switch for me would be, for a vastly different designed os that removes all of the burdens the current os' all have.
i'd switch to singularity any day if i could. but google os would be sort of a linux-mixdown with lots of google crap on top. nothing new except the gui maybe. and the vista guy is very pretty and functional so i have no need to switch there as well. -
I don't buy anything just because it's from brand 'x'.
I'd first research this GOS, but really, I doubt GOS would be any better than Apple or Microsoft OS. I would think it would be another Linux Distro, while good, doesn't really cater my needs as a graphics designer. -

i actually would buy a Goolge OS. I would not buy a Google OS, but a Goolge, yes, I would. Just because of the funny name
(haven't noticed it while seeing the topic so many times made it a good laugh now) -
Like psygn wrote, it would seem likely that it be something like a linux distro overhaul.
Why pay for something that's free in every way already? -
Yea, i wouldn't even take that for free... you couldn't pay me to use it -
No need for another full OS, period.
Besides, Linux is so huge now, if anything is the next big OS, id say Linux is.
Where does Google come off making an OS?? They were just a SEARCH ENGINE daaaaaaaaaaam!
Up next, Google Car!!
-
Well Google is trying hard to expand. The two things that they have pretty much locked down away from the competition is their search engine and their advertisement program.
Everything else is frosting on the cake. I use gmail, but I rarely encounter anyone with a gmail account (of course us digital natives would probably use it -- I'm talking about everyone else; the majority). People tend to use Yahoo, Hotmail, and their ISP's e-mail service.
They have really been trying to expand their market recently, so a Google OS isn't really that farfetched. Especially after releasing Google Chrome, the Google Phone, etc. -
Eh, it reminds me of the South Park ep where WalMart takes over everything, maybe we will soon see g-Mart, for all your lower cased letter needs!!
-
i dont think i would buy a google os any time soon. i had the google phone with the google os and the phone crashed, then started to glitch like crazy about 9 days after i got it
-
I'd first try Google OS on a virtual machine to see how it works in my environment. I doubt though that it would be my primary OS since my job revolves around developing software for Windows.
-
I guess i already did -- i have a g1 running android. and yes android can be installed on a pc.
-
No never ever.
I don't want Google to maul through all my data.
Alos, I don't think I use any Google feature except web based search - without suggestion and web based maps.
Years ago I did use Google Earth, but I haven't for a long time...
No Google apps for me - thank you, I pass. -
I dont want Google to be the next Microsoft, so no.
-
-
-
I would do a dual boot with Google's OS and some flavor of Windows. Use Google for tinkering purposes, then switch back to windows when I need to do something serious or play a game.
-
I wouldn't use it unless it was some extremely stable and revolutionary OS, which I highly doubt it will be.
I'm used to Windows, I won't even touch a Mac, why would I choose Google? -
dual booting might be fun...
-
-
I would try it.
-
Who said a Google OS would cost money?
Given their history of other services, it seems more likely to me that they'd offer it for free, with the caveat that it's only compatible with their software and apps. -
And if you think you have bloatware etc on some manufacturers laptops now, just see what junk Google would add + popup advertising
They would have to offer it for free
And I would not be interested

If Google were to make their own OS, wouldn't they make a Linux variant? It seems as their best starting point...
-
Right now, no. I would rather see other's try it out first..and report back on their findings!
I like using Google = After all, Google is your friend!!!
But, I'm just happy that if finds 99.8% of what I'm looking for when doing a search!

Google doesn't exactly have a good track record when it comes to privacy, so no.
-
Buy? Not as long as Windows & Linux is around. It would have to be an OS that takes a completely differ approach than the norm.
Free? Sure, I would love to try it out if they came out with an OS. -

If they don't track every single movement I made and could play Windows games on it, why not?
-
Many people here have no idea how much info WGA sends to Microsoft and they blame Google.
-
davepermen Notebook Nobel Laureate
uhm, yeah, like they do send much compared to what google has collected over you..
-
The difference is that google tells you what they do but Microsoft does not. Moreover, you have to be one of those people who has no idea what a keyboard is if you allow google to collect everything about you. -
Staring this up again, because it look's like Google has some plans ahead!

I looked at pictures of Chrome OS, its too dumb for my tastes. Playing it on VM will be fine, but it being my main OS? Doubt it.
Unless GOogle makes me retracy my sentence with something up their sleeve, I have no big problems with Windows and no good reason to go to Chrome OS. -
Chrome OS has waaaayyyss to go!
I just booted it from a USB stick. Looks ok... Chrome Web browser for linux.
But there are a number of problemsfirst one I ran into was that I am at work and I need to use a proxy to get online. So I connected the wifi (worked without problem) but when I went to config the proxy it wanted to load a web page.... well web page needs the proxy to be set up. Classic chicken and egg stuff.
I also tried it at home with a normal connection. Nothing special... a bit better web browser than a quick start OS but no multimedia support. -
-
With all of their flaws, I find that I really like Microsoft products/apps, particularly Windows and MS Office. And I am very impressed with all of their features and the massive ability to customize both. I think that Google still has a long way to go, to even come close to what Microsoft can presently offer its customers, but I hope Google will keep trying!!! They're sort of like a smart little kid who's not quite ready to fill a grownup's shoes. . .

The Fire Snake Notebook Virtuoso
Just my personal take but I think it will be garbage and I would not pay for it. From what I heard it will be based on Ubuntu or that Canonical(company that makes Ubuntu) will help create it for Google.
-
No. Google scares me.
-
I see this as more a Latitude On-esque feature, and not so much as something that can justify a WHOLE new device.
-
If it is light on resources I'd put it on an old notebook for surfing use only. It may be a good option to get guests to stop using my computer to check their Facebook. However, I likely wouldn't keep it unless the resource use is significantly less than XP and it could network with Windows and linux machines.
Would you use a Google Operating System?
