    I have a SonyFE790 with a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-K16M burner (according to device manager).

But I get this error message when attempting to burn a DIVX movie to a blank DVD-R (4.7GB) disk:

It reads: "Windows encountered a problem when trying to copy this file. What do you want Windows to do?"

And the only options are try again or cancel. And clicking on try again 100 times doesn't work either...

The burner lets me burn files to blank CDs but not DVD-Rs.

    WTF?

From Sony's site the FE I own has: "DVD+-R DL_DVD+-RW_DVD-RAM Drive".

    Yes, I only burned 2 DVD-R's though.

Both of those disks were backup copies of Windows/Sonys partition.

The backup process may have altered your drivers in some way while it copied them. I know this statement doesn't help as I'm not too sure myself.

Maybe you could reinstall the drivers from Sony's website.

I tried Sonic which I've used before with no luck...And Nero isn't working either. I think this is a big problem!

What OS are you using? Are you merely trying to copy the file onto the disk? Do all DivX files have this problem, or is it just that one file?

You need an external program to burn it on to a DVD such as Nero/Sonic (like what you've used), but you have to ensure it is burnt as a data disc.

Ok, you have burnt DVD-R to make a back up before but now it won't.
Did you do a full restore or a semi restore since then, trying to get rid of the Sony Bloatware?
Iy yes you nee to reinstall Nero, then follow what iOsiris said.

Who says this has anything to do with pirated movies?

How big is the file that you're trying to burn? If you've burnt DVD-R's on your notebook before I don't see why it's not working this time. Nero has always seemed to work with all my needs in the past. Are you just trying to burn it as a data disk?
