    X64 Team Members Unite!!!

Ok...Lets see what we are really made of here...

I just purchased a Toshiba U300 at an incredible price of $499 brand new (Wahoo!) for my wife. The part number/model is PSU30C-NS508C.

I will be upgrading it, or attempting to upgrade it, to 64 bit using my 64Bit disk and the original system Vista Premium number which is totally legal.

Toshiba does not supply or offer any assistance on obtaining and installing 64 Bit drivers.

The system is as follows but there is a a few concerns:

Intel 4965AGN wifi (yes surprised me as well)
    Realtek RTL8181 LAN
    Intel 965GM Chipset and graphics
    Realtek AL6268 Sound
    Synaptics Touchpad (I have this)
Ricoh Card Reader (I may try my Dell Ricoh drivers)
Toshiba Bluetooth Stack (wow Found the 64Bit driver fm Toshiba)
    Chicony Webcamera
    AHCI Driver (Got It)

I will be swapping the hard drive with a spare ssd of course (teehee).

    Possible concerns....

    1. Has anyone tried Dell X64 drivers in other manufacturers laptop?

    2. Has anyone set up a similar system and encountered any probs I might want to be aware of?

    4. Are there any thoughts on an appropriate display driver download?

Ok...so I will let that start our thread off...

I must admit that Im curious to see how we will come together here.

Our reward? Well, I would love to fly all of us to some great restaurant and feast on lobster, crab and shrimp while drinking some great wine but thats not going to happen. So... I guess we will have to rely on the feeling of accomplishment that we would feel having come together as a team for the first time.

The only viable thank you I can offer is the promise that, similar to my Dell Clean Install Thread, I will document this and create a Toshiba Clean Install Thread.

    Let the challenge begin!!!

You tried the Lenovo driver on your Dell, it should work vice-versa. If it doesn't give me the .inf from Dell and Toshiba and I'll fix the problem.

Good point. Thank you, I appreciate that. I will try and hit that method first. I was wondering though if Dell puts any protection on their drivers to make them install in only Dell systems much as they do with the Dell OS.

I will try this first with the Dell 64Bit 4965 wifi driver and hopefully it will work. Vista now downloads and updates several drivers on its own which might help.

The only protection might be in the INF, but that can be taken care of. Try Intel drivers first.

Hey Flem found this for the webcam...looks like it might actually work:
    http://www.greghughes.net/rant/MyHPPavillionWebCameraIssueResolvedByUsingAcerDriversNoLess.aspx

If you were a n00b I wouldn't give you these links, but try these for the RealTek:

I would try here first, there are several to choose from:
    http://myvistasupport.blogspot.com/

If all else fails here are two different drivers you can flirt with:
    http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads...L)+/RTL8139D(L)/RTL8100(L)/RTL8130/RTL8139B(L)
    http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads...=24&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false

    Happy upgrading!

Thanks all so far... Heading into work after spending the day trying to pry that out of my wifes hands.

Truly appreciated and I will start working on this tomorrow.

I have to say though, the build of this system is absolutely amazing. I didn't like the fact the there are no backup disks (you can build them from the disk) and it takes 45 minutes for its self installation routing to complete.

Hint to others with Toshibas...call in right away and convince them to send you a hard set of recovery disks for free (normally $45). I did.

Ok bit of a 32Bit update... I was able to pry the machine out of my wifes lap for a few hours tonight and thought I would try a few things. Without doing a clean install, I stripped it of more bloatware than I could ever imagine. The drive was just over 21Gb to start and once I finished with it, 13.5Gb. I then followed this thread and... Darn!!! did it do wonders for my system. I have to give credit to the guy for having the smarts to get all those tips from all those people and putting together a...a....yes...a masterpiece. I tried to rep him but the system won't let me for some reason (lol)

Okok so you all can probably figure out I have been working all night and am writing on fumes here. But seriously, I just wanted to pass on, for no particular reason, that in 32 bit, with no Clean install, I have tweaked the system incredibly and realized a start time of 36 seconds on a hard drive.

My next goal is to rip the HD out and throw the Memoright SSD in and build a 64Bit OS, piece by piece...Thanks all again for the help.

We Are x64!!! (kinda catchy eh?)

Nice choice! The U300 is one of the best notebooks I've ever owned. Excellent balance in performance, weight, and price (I got it for 700 a while back when the specs matching higher end notebooks)

About the display driver install, you'll probably have to manual install the drivers since (same with 32Bit drivers) so download the embedded version as well just in case. The instructions for manual installation is here

Good luck on your install :D

Yes I have to admit, this laptop is probably one of the best builds I have ever had my hands on. Its much smaller than the M1330 as well. For those not familiar here are a few piks; checkout the difference in size between the U300 and the M1330 considering both are 13.3" footprints.

Having said that, I have to concede that 40 plus minutes wait through the self installation period, lack of recovery disks, and length of time I have spent with customer service in order to validate my warranty and get free recovery disks is a bit frustrating. How the heck can you get a 26 second boot with a HD? Impossible I say!!! (lol)

Why not just grab the generic 4965 driver from Intel directly?

    Intel 3945/4965 64bit drivers

Or were you just testing the Dell ones to see if you could cross load?

So have you shoved a 64bit system in it at all? We are talking x64 here, aren't we? ;)

Also, an update on what's working and what's not might help for idiots like me who don't follow :D
