Well I am soon about to up my ram from 1 GB to 4GB and I am curious about upping from XP Home to Vista. I am a bit cautious as I am an XP fanboy... quite a heavy one may I add... but my system is a Vostro 1500 with the following specs
t7100 (1.8ghz 800mhz FSB)
1gb ram ( WILL BE 4GB)
8600m GT
(currently XP)
I Game regularly for hours at a time, heavy on media (movies/music), graphics artist, and also skinning/customization of windows.
Is it in my interest to upgrade to vista? ( i will upgrade to 4gb regardless) If so 32bit or 64bit? and why.
I am currently really interested in 64bit
also I am between countries (japan and canada) constantly and am planning on buying everything in canada, as for vista (home premium) will it run japanese software. I had issues with english (US) XP home/Pro running japanese software so I run a japanese os as it can run software from any country in any language.
THanks in advance

Vista Home Premium X64
Actually I use Vista Ultimate x64 -

Anyway, I have xp pro with 4 gb of ram.. 32-bit... I can see 3.2 gb of the ram.. run fines.... very smooth. I have vista Ultimate 32-bit that I use on a laptop.
when I upgrade my desktop to vista I'll more than likely try the x64 version for testing... my first try with vista 64 was a complete disaster... but that was Nov 06... so take my comment with a grain of salt.
(32-bit not x86... x86 can mean 16-bit, 32-bit, 64-bit -- although, I get what you are talking about). -
Only thing that worries me is not being able to run the Japanese software.
X64 vs X86 which is faster for gaming/media? Only benchmarks i could find were VERY old
thanks -
thanks for the link its quite helpful
would you say 120 gb 5400 rpm is enough or shall I up it I was looking at your Inspiron and noticed the HD i was looking at on NCIX
thanks -
Thanks for the post Jalf,
I heard that Vista is starting to catch up to XP bench marks. is that not true? -
Microsoft Claims X64 are the ones for Gamer.. but who trusts MS's Description anyway. (According to them IE7 is the safest.. & i got so many trojans, Homepage Hijacks only coz of IE.)
Since i use X86 i ll say X86 & i have heard X64 is way too advanced for year 2008? -

Put simply, I would not have purchased my current hd had I known the performance of the laptop. It is fast, but not faster than an equivalent desktop (money wise).
Comparing a 5400 to the 7200, I'm not sure if it were worth the money... I mean, it is quicker... or so it seems -- hard when you don't have something side by side. I'm not sure... if I had it all over to do again, I'd do something else... although I'm happy with the laptop. -
hmmm.. currently sitting on a pot of 80$, When working ( i can when ever i want) 23$ an hour doing regular manual labour, is it better to get RAM, Hard drive and upgrade to XP pro (GF has a key i have to verify but an option none the less) or Upgrade RAM, VISTA, or would it be worth tossing in RAM VISTA HARD DRIVE
HITACHI Travelstar 200 GB SATA 7200 RPM 16MB Mobile Hard Drive ($195.73 CAD)
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium Edition 64BIT DVD OEM ( $125.99 CAD)
RAM ( 80-90$) -
For me, XP Pro. Several programs I need for my line of work and study still don't work with Vista, and Vista has personally let me down a number of times.
Grated, Vista has had many improvements since I last used it...but I am not willing to try it again for a while. -

Ram will provide a great performance boost.
XP is a great OS... stable, works well, good OS... you can always get vista later. Going to vista should not be a top consideration, when vista also needs great hardware to run it.
Hard drive you can always upgrade later.... fairly easy to upgrade that....
I always max out on cpu speed in my purchases (or close to it). My next upgrade is normally ram... then hd (if needed).
OS? XP is a nice os... you don't have to fall into the vista marketing hype... although, I do run vista on my laptop now and it is very smooth.... I need to update my signature to vista ultimate... lol -
hmm.. I could pull off the time and get it all at once, seeing as it is spring break and my father is low on staff... would you say good idea to get it all at once, maybe minus vista.. seems still a bit 50/50 according to forum members

Since I'm on this site, I'd say follow my recommendation above... it is fairly simple, cpu, ram, and HD....
Oh, crap, and you should also max out your video card... that can't be replaced either.... forgot about that. lol....
Again, it really depends on what you need.... Sounds like you want to "go almost" cheap with a laptop... then I don't know what you want to do with it... Do you travel a lot? For graphic artists, I'd go for a desktop... but that is me... sorry.
I found paint.net, photoshop, and fireworks cs3 slow on the laptop. Well, not slow, but a lot slower than my desktop. -
You have a good GPU plus adding 4gb RAM so even if Vista does take a small hit on performance, its still at a well acceptable level.
Try x64 first since you sound keen about it. its not the end of the world if it doesnt work out for you -
I was skeptical of Vista given what I'd heard but decided to give it a chance. It then proceeded to give me tons of reasons that I shouldn't have given it a chance. The problems I had never were fixed, and overall Vista significantly decreased my enjoyment of my laptop.
Granted, there's probably been improvements since then. But it's only been two months, and the problems weren't fixed in five months, so I doubt they are now. And since XP is working perfectly after two months (as opposed to two days for Vista [no exagerration]) I see no reason to give Vista another chance for a good long time.
I wouldn't switch to Vista if I were paid money to do so. And I wouldn't advise anyone else to pay money to switch to Vista. Stick with XP for now. -

the last post ^ is making me kinda uneasy about vista
does anyone have recent benchmarks? -

Vista Ultimate x64 ran much smoother than the 3 months i owned it as a 32bit OS! No software problems or driver problems apart from NHC but i have atsiv enabled RMclock =).

There shouldn't be any noticeable difference either way. The games are the same, after all. *If* there is a difference, it's most likely due to immature drivers, so it's temporary.
I'd go with x64, simply because then you get access to all your RAM, and tbh, there aren't any big disadvantages by doing it.
I'd be more worried about the switch to Vista in the first place. You will lose a good chunk of gaming performance.Click to expand...Click to expand... -
