Were you connected online when you activated your Windows XP Pro copy? If you didn't, try doing that.

If you have installed a copy of Windows Xp Professional into your computer, and install all of the drivers that came with laptop, and signed online either through a NIC or modem, you would goto Start / Programs / Accessories / Activate Windows. For it to be activated you have to be online so it can transmit the product key to Microsoft and register that you have done it already. If that still keeps doing the same thing, I would suggest to reinstall Windows XP Pro again.

I think the problems is with this copy of XP Pro. Have you or anybody else used this copy of XP Pro on a different system? I think the systems trying to tell you that this copy (Product Key) has already been activated by someone. Once activated, the product key gets associated to a specific system/config, MS keeps this info on their database. Once you log on to your system, it'll ask you to Activate, it'll check online to see if it's vaild and report back. So it's a good possibility that this CD has been used before. If it has, just call up Microsoft and tell them that it's being installed into a notebook. From what I remember reading on this site, MS will let you use the same copy of XP on 1 desktop and 1 notebook. All they will do is set it up on their end and the next time you log on, it should be ok.

man, I hate software that has to "call home" to be activated, but I guess it's all software companies can really do to protect from piracy these days.

    Bootleg,

Now that you mention it, it may have been an Office issue someone had posted about that indicated that it can be used on 2 different types of systems. Thanks for the correction. Regarding the problem Precious is having, it's most likely having installs of the same OS in 2 different systems. No real way to get around this problem other than to have 1st system de-activated or buy a new copy of XP Pro. This is why it's always a good idea to get a system that has XP Pro already included with the system. No need to go through these types of headaches.

    Hi Venom,
    I agree.
I think it could have been me that said you could have office on both your desktop and notebook at the same time. Tonight after reading this thread, it did'nt sound right that ms would let us have their OS on both a desktop and notebook from one license, since it would mean anyone buying a notebook with XP on it would be in effect getting a free copy of XP for their desktop too because it would work both ways; so I went to the ms site and read the EULA for XP and confirmed each computer needs it's own license.

I don't understand exactly what precious did. It sounds to me like his notebook came with XP home and he took that off and put XP pro onto the notebook, but it was probably a copy that was already activated on another machine. On a side note, I think micro$oft is really starting to (pardon the pun) crack down with no mercy on cracked copies of it's XP operating system. I say this because many of my co-workers although some of them have 6 figure incomes, are so cheap that still steal their software. In the past few weeks one by one they are having the same catastrophic loss of both copies of their MBR(master boot record). It has happened to 6 coworkers I know of, all with cracked copies of XP. They all had anitvirus running and even restoring from a backup one fellow has repeated the loss after a few days. I don't think it is coincidence as the system are all different with this the only thing in common. Whatever they may be doing, it seems to be working and effective too. Because of this 2 coworkers have since bought XP and the other 4 are still fighting it.
The bad thing is, 5 of the coworkers did not have backups of their hard drive and lost not only their OS, but all their data as well.
