Hey guys I just did a fresh install of xp on my dell, and am having a small problem. When I power the system on it gives me the option of booting two windows xp os's. The top one works (the new one I just installed) and the bottom one doesn't (the old one). The odd part is that I formatted the drive it was on, so I don't get why the option is there to boot the old xp, it shouldn't even be on my system. Can I get my system to stop prompting me to choose one of the xp's or, better yet, get rid of the old xp all together? Thanks for the help.

Did you format the whole HD of just a partition?

Do you have more than one harddrive?

Post your boot.ini file from the root of your first drive (c :)

I have one hard drive and formatted the whole thing. I also removed all of the partitions before formatting, So nothing should have been left. If you tell me how to post the boot.ini file I will.

I had the same problem on my Dell after a fresh install. Go to Start>My Computer>right click to display "Properties" > click "Properties">Advanced> Go to Start Up and Recovery Settings>Edit Start Up Options

Take a look at it. Is there more than one OS listed? Be careful to delete the right one.

    Hope this helps.

Just copy and paste the contents of the file thetick97 refers to and we can tell you what line to remove....and it may shed some light on the issue.

Deleting the partitions and formatting should have prevented this from occcuring
