I did a search but all the threads are closed. There is one from 5/08...

Okay, I have my reasons to want Win XP Pro. please don't try to convince me out of it... like in the aforementioned thread.

I have a broken computer (e1705) that I bought in July 2006. It had Win XP Pro on it. I believe I have the Win XP Pro sp2 discs that came with it.
Although I can't be sure because the discs are at home and not here with me at college, yes i know i should have brought them with me

I have a backup file on an external hard drive made before this computer died (e1705).

I want to buy a computer that has Win XP Home on it. How can I (I'm a complete and utter newb so in plain english please) make the new computer (Vostro 1500) Win XP Pro?

Do I just get the Vostro, turn it on, insert the Win XP Pro discs (that came with the e1705) and follow the prompts? I haven't gotten the Vostro yet, so there is nothing on it I want to save. Everything I want is in a backup file made from the e1705 on an external hard drive.

Or do I have to buy the Win XP Pro UPGRADE discs?

Or if say I went to squad of geeks, and they have Win XP Pro discs there, could they update it to Pro for me? (I understand that will cost money but let's pretend it doesn't)

Thanks so much! Don't be afraid to dumb it down.

I have simply used an XP Pro disc to update a computer running Home. Stick in the disc and let Autoplay open it. It should prompt you to start the upgrade process from there.
