Windows XP wont boot, and if I goto boot in Safe mode it hangs on MSU.sys. Could it potentially be hard ware failure?

Have you tried reinstalling/formatting your Windows installation with the XP disc?
-
Get a XP install disc and perform a repair install.
It should fix all those corrupted system files -
or you could also try to repair your current installation of XP w/ the "repair" option when you boot w/ the XP disk
-
you could also try a chkdsk /p then a chkdsk /r with an xp disc or also NTFS for dos has a great chkdsk tool in it that works great has saved me a bunch of times. If none of that works then go for the repair option.

he cant even get to safe mode w/ command prompt so no chance for checkdisk
edit, not xp related but i just realised vista doesnt have a repair install option. Ive been telling vista users to do so lol -
After 10 trys, it finally booted without me needing to do anything with the discs, but I still dont have a clue what the issue is.

Edit: Glad to see you got it going.
