When, if ever, will SP3 be released for Windows XP Professional? Even with an SP2 disk, it takes forever to download and install all the updates. It would be nice to have a consolidated SP3 file to run.

Why on Earth would you want *ALL* the updates?

You DO know that 'not' all those updates are to improve the overall system stability/compatability, right?

In fact, most of them are 'security' updates - of which, you don't need to apply if you have an inbound & outbound firewall, plus an antivirus scanner and even perhaps an anti-spyware utility :)

Jordan, you are completly wrong. You think that AV & anti-spyware is best OSes have Loopholes that can be accesed & the average person doesnt have a Anti-rootkit either those updates are important as all the others are.

I thought it was going to be released around the same time Vista SP1 was going to be released?

Yes, which has no set release date unfortunatly.
WinXPSP3 as stated by Microsoft ''will only be a collection of all updates since SP2''. Which is unexpected & many are made.

You know you can just integrate them into your XP disk.

Try using nLite, and integrate RyanVM Update Pack 2.1.11 and 2.1.11.13 Update Pack. That should shave minutes to hours (depending on your internet connection and computer speed) off Windows Update.

I think you're thinking about Windows Server 2008.

Or I could be totally wrong.

I'm sorry, but I don't recall where I said anti-viruses & anti-spyware are the SOLE keys to a fully secure system.

What I DID say however having a good 'firewall', antivirus, and antispyware utilities would be equally as good if not better.

Frankly, loopholes and backdoors can be accessed regardless of having a fully 'patched' windows. The fact of the matter is that if one isn't careful as to the sites they visit and what they run on their machine, it can and will be infected/vulnerable to a wide array of vulnerabilities.

Most of these security updates are for systems that don't even have such things as firewalls, and work in non-firewalled enviroments such as corporate LANs/WANs, etc.

While I'm not sure if any of you have had first hand experience with this - but these 'updates' can also screw up your machine/programs as they are made in a jiffy without full compatability testing; hence why they are so aptly named 'patches' :)

There's also a reason why corporations don't have all their windows machines on 'auto update' - but heck, what do they know that ThomasH doesn't, right? I mean, they just maintain/run hundreds and thousands of computers, right? ;)
Update to your hearts content people :)

Also keep in mind that some people (like myself) are required to have all the updates installed on their computer. It's a requirement to access my university's network. And yes, we do have to install software that checks for updates prior to connecting.

I have tried using nlite without success. I just did a simple add of the compilation of the MS udpates and it failed on me. Multiple times. So the time I spent farting around with it, I just went ahead an installed and patched normally.
