I have changed the hard drive in my 2003 old notebook and then
tried to reinstall the Toshiba drivers including XP home. A
'machine wrong' message came up. Talked to Toshiba
who directed me to their DMI download which I cannot
seem to install.
Next I tried to just install my separate XP Pro disc but it
stopped when a 'shell32dll' file could not be found.
I have located another download from Microsoft but again
am unable to install this.
The machine continues to try to install the XP OS but runs
around in a loop trying and prompting to install the
misssing file again.
Can anyone tell me how to
1, Stop this process it appears to be stuck in now trying
to find the missing file?
2, How to load the DMI download from Toshiba?
3, How to load the Microsoft download for this shell issue?
Looking forward to any suggestions.
Regards to all.

Did you put the DMI update utility on a bootable CD and boot from it at computer startup as instructed? The DMI cannot be updated within Windows. Post a link to the Toshiba support site you downloaded it from (if it's a public download).

No, I didn't but will try now.
i think I will have problems as the machine is stuck in its attemps to find the shell file in XP pro.
Will update -
Make sure you set your BIOS to boot from the CD drive before the hard drive. (Or simply hit the F key to go into the 'boot device' menu at boot up. The appropriate F key will be displayed on the black screen that is up for a few seconds with all the white text.) -
have selected cd drive to boot but no joy, it still tries to start windows

Are you positive you made the CD bootable? What CD burning software did you use? (Make sure you refer to the instructions included with the download from Toshiba)
