Hello everyone, this is my first post here so hopefully someone will be able to point me in the right direction. I trying searching for my problem but didn't find anything similar to what I have going on.

First of my notebook is a HP Pavilion dv9000, with the intel centrino duo processors, 2gb or DDR2, and the nvidia go7600 card. I am currently running Windows XP SP2 and have been since SP2 was released.

When SP3 first became available I tried to do the update but it kept giving me errors half way through the installation. So today I tried it again and I got the same errors.

I get a pop up window saying the following:

"Service Pack 3 Setup could not back up registry key
    HKCR\.DVR-MS to file C:\windows\$NtServicepackuninstall$\reg00516. 5:"

    "Access is Denied"

Then after I hit ignore it continues on for a few seconds then pops up another similar window with a different file but still related to the .DVR-MS file. I hit ignore on that too and it continues for about 10 more seconds then finally I get a third pop up that simply says:

    "Service Pack 3 Setup"
    "Access is Denied"

And it undo's the installation and tells me that it could not install the update and now it may not work properly. Does anyone have any ideas as to what is going on with this. I have never had a problem installing windows updates before.

Are you updating from Windows Update or the standalone install file? Did you buy any chance slipstream your installation?

I've only tried it by going through windows update. I haven't tried any other way because I need this notebook and can't afford to have something happen to it. I have everything backed up but I just don't want to go through the hassle of re-installing.

You didn't mention if your OS is XP or XP Pro. If you have XP Pro you might want to try the technique in the following thread (fourth post from the bottom from - "aczechgurlfor") where the OP was having the same problem with SP2. I read that it also works for SP3.

Well atbnet I tried that link and it did the exact same thing. So I guess I will just stick to XP SP2 until I have to upgrade to vista or 7. Thanks for the help though.

EDIT: This solution also requires XP Pro (Sorry, but it may help others). I was mistaken that it didn't.

Also much the same answer from the following thread:

Here' the solution from a Microsoft support chat session. Download SubInACL.exe from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...D8FE-4A91-93CF-ED6985E3927B&displaylang=enand follow the instructions at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949377 on how to use SubInACL.exe to reset the registry and file permissions (Method 3). After doing this, installation for SP3 ran without a hitch.

Apparently the file "SubInACL.exe" mentioned in one of the downloads says it works for Windows XP, then further down in the OS list it again mentions XP Pro. Sorry, I guess I am just making this thread longer and not contributing a useful suggestion.

Hey any help is great, I've been trying to figure this out on my own for months now. But you're right that file is for XP Pro, and I tried following the instructions from that other link you posted but the commands did not work on my system.

I truly do appreciate the help though, and if you come up with any thing else please post it.

OK, here is another item to try:
Start > Run > type in

    regedit
    Click OK or press Enter

Click the plus sign next to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
    Scroll down to .dvr-ms
Right click .dvr-ms and choose Permissions
Make sure that Administrators and System are listed with these Permissions:

    Full Control
    Read

If not, check those boxes and then click Apply, OK.
    Close the registry editor.

Ok I did all of that except it kept telling me I didn't have permission to view the permissions, but then it let me in. There is nothing in the users box and if I try to change ANYTHING it won't let me.

Here is a screen shot of the window.

The immediate problem here is that there are currently no users (or user groups) associated with .dvr-ms to whom permissions may be granted. Click on the "Add..." button below the pane that's titled users and groups, and add Administrators and System as users. Once that's done, click once on each entry to highlight it, and then you should be able to set the permissions for that user using the tick boxes.

i had the exact same problem. just corrected it today after a day and a half of troubleshooting. what a pain the .

anyways, you need to reset the access permissions on the registry keys. i wasnt able to do thsi manually so i used method 1 under the advanced trouble shooting section.
