    XP and Vista Question

    If i were to install xp on my laptop would i be able to use my vista licence (which came with the laptop) on a new desktop i'm making or not?

    also can anyone help me as to why when i install xp on my acer aspire 5630 the sound card won't work even if i install the drivers, i had to install vista back on here because of it.

    Nope, OEM licenses are tied to the computer they are first installed on.

    Did you instll the Microsoft UAA HD drivers before installing the sound drivers?

    If you have a HD audio device, then the Microsoft patch is necessary for the drivers to function. Dont know what audio device your Acer has but the UAA drivers should be available from Acer or just search the web.

    sorry to hijack, but if i have vista preloaded on a laptop and downgrade to xp...can I return to vista at a later date using my oem liscense? I can get a vista dvd from somewhere im sure as acer didnt providce me with one suprise suprise

    You have to read the terms of the license you plan on transferring. Which shouldn't be a surprise! They wouldn't be separate licenses if they were the same :p

    Windows OEM licenses are tied to the hardware they are pre-loaded or shipped with. That's one of the reasons the license is offered at a discount to the OEM.

    Windows RETAIL licenses are NOT tied to the hardware they are shipped on. So you can transfer them to another computer or person so long as you completely remove it from the hardware you installed it on first. One of the reasons it costs more.
