Recently XP during boot makes me select between XP Pro or Windows Recovery Console. This is a new development. What is going on? What do I need to do to stop this from happening?

There is probably an extra entry in your C:\BOOT.INI file( may be hidden in explorer ). Run "notepad C:\BOOT.INI" and delete the recovery mode line under [operating systems]. If you want to play it safe, copy and paste the contents of BOOT.INI here so others can possibly provide more help. Another way to examine the BOOT.INI file is run "msconfig".

No, I have not installed or uninstalled the operating system.

I ran msconfig and examined the BOOT.INI file... last line was C:\cmdcons\bootsect.dat='Microsoft Windows Recovery Console' cmdcons

How did this statement get into BOOT.ini? Can I just delete this statement or what?

Yes, delete it. Should solve the problem.
