Hi all, I've been tasked with fixing my SIL desktop PC and not sure where to start. The log in at boot up has changed all by itself (at least that's what she says). Is it possible she has a virus that did this? There are no user names at boot up like there was before. Just the one like Administrator or something like that.

She can't find the install disk or maybe she didn't make one when she got it so I'm not sure if I can repair the installation to get around this. I do have an XP disk but not sure it will work and I haven't tried it yet. Also, it has a floppy drive and CD drive so I have some options.

Any suggestions before I begin? TIA. :(

I believe some of the .Net stuff changes the auto login.
just do a "control userpasswords2" and set it to auto-login.
I do recommend you not use the default administrator account though, or at least create a secondary admin account in case this one goes corrupt.

DO IT WHERE? I've never seen that command before. Am I supposed to F8 during boot up and run it from the prompt?

I used Austrumi to change the Owner password to blank.

I boot the machine and click on the Chess icon.

It goes past that to the Desktop screen then immediately "saves settings" then logs off.

I can't get past it to use the Start button or anything. Help!

Could be malware that changed the userinit entry in the registry.

    HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Need to change the winlogon entry to use C:\windows\system32\userinit.exe
