As I'm installing XP I'm getting an error that says "Setup cannot copy the file":

    IPCFG.XML
    OSINFO.xml
    potscfg.xml
    pppcfg.xml
    xmlp_bec.xdr
    xmlp-ecp.xdr
    etc....

    Anyone know what this means?
Can I live without these files?
Can I get these on the internet?
    Thanks.

Looks to me like your CD is damaged (unreadable). First clean it and try. If that doesn't work, then see if you can copy all the files on to the hard disk from another PC. If you can do it successfully, then burn a new CD. You may have better luck with a different CD.

Because different CD ROMs have different tolerance levels to erroneous disks. Maybe your notebook CD ROM is too sensitive to even very small deformities.

I am having exactly the sameproblem as you on a machine that previosly had Vista Home edition installed and on which I am attempting to install windows XP Pro.
What was the final disposition of your problem?

I don't believe that it is a defective CD

From another source i determined what the problem is. When you attempt to install Win XP Pro on top of a previous Vista installation, if you don't delete and recreate\format the partition, the installation attempts to use the already existing files but Vista's inceased security denies access/permission to the new installation. Specifically, installation finds the files on the hard drive but doesn't provide access to them. Hence the problems later on.
The solution is to delete the C partition when starting installation, re-create the partition and format it again then start the installation - hopefully successfully.
