Ok I'm going to XP again on my laptop....specs below. Are there any huge differences between Pro and Home? I'm a decently advanced user but mainly I use it for traveling and a few games. I don't even play much in the way of new games but I'm tired of my computer running at 43% idling on Ram usage.

The differences I found is that it seems to already be a little tweaked to operate more efficiently and it has the 'Backup' tool which I think home didn't.

I'm not saying those are the only differences, just the only I noticed. If you google 'xp home pro difference' a bunch will come up the outline them all.

This page gives a bunch: http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_home_pro.asp

For me, the main ones for me are that XP Pro can connect to windows domains - home cannot. Also, Pro has the capability for software restriction policies, etc. I like having fine grained control over things on my PC.

Pro has more administration and business tools, like RDP and the ability to forcefully take ownership of protected files. Unless you do a lot of technical work or have a need for remote desktop, Home will be fine for you.

Greg I think the three main differences is that XP Pro offers:

    1) Better Networking features
    2) Backup features
    3) Slightly better Security

Other than both OS's are identical in efficiency, function and operation.

To the OP, congrats on your decision to upgrade to XP. I got tired of the sluggishness and instability problems of Vista, BSOD's, Apps and services crashing.

XP is just so stable and has been since 2001. :)

Maybe it was a placebo effect that made me think of Pro as being more efficient ;).

If you need to take ownership in XP Home (e.g., when someone makes their files "private"), boot into Safe Mode: it will then give you the same Sharing & Security dialog as XP Pro.

I still run both and for me they seem to run identical in terms of performance and quickness. :)

The 1700 runs Vista P, the 1500 runs XP Home and my gaming rig has XP Pro. :)

I know. The literal difference between XP Pro and Home is like 2-3 files and some registry entries.

Is that with superfetch enabled, or disabled?
