Micro$oft claims that starting early 2008, its contracts with computer manufacturers will require companies to sell only Vista-loaded machines
As much as I passionately HATE Vista, it seems like I have no option but to go with it.
I'm seriously thinking of buying a Vostro 1500 with XP on it. But, will getting a Vista future-proof my laptop? How do you support the idea of buying an XP-machine now and installing Vista on it later? Will there be any driver problems, similar to ones faced while installing XP on a Vista-loaded machine?

I'd like to hope there won't be driver problems. I'm looking get a Vostro 1500 with XP home to coast through the next year until Vista is solid (SP1's coming out around Nov, I'm told) and more mainstream. At that point, I'll buy the Vista upgrade. I don't think it'll be too bad, since hey, they offer Vostro's with Vista drivers right now, right? If I'm being overly optimistic, let me know.

PS. by that time I think i'll also get a new HDD. I'm disappointed that they don't offer 7200 rpm drives on the Vostros.

It will soon become easier to find Vista drivers for XP computers sold in '06 and in '07 than it will be to find XP drivers for Vista computers sold after '07, I imagine. It's part of the planned obsolescence model. The idea is to keep you using (and buying) newer operating systems and hardware - not to allow you to continue to use software of your own choosing on hardware of your own choosing for as long as you desire. That isn't the Microsoft model.

I think Overclocker is right. Because, a significant majority of the computers today run on XP, manufacturers will be 'forced' to put out drivers for those interested in upgrading to Vista.
I guess I'll go with XP for now and upgrade to Vista later, hopefully without hiccups. It should be a simple DIY right?

It's an easy installation. If you're cautious, you can download the drivers necessary for Vista once you buy the computer. Then you'll have them handy if and when you decide to install Vista. That's what I did when I bought my computer - though after trying Vista, I soon went back to XP. Keep in mind that I bought a refurbished model that was originally released in '06, yet it was easy to find V drivers at the company website (Gateway). So any new computers that are loaded with XP will definitely have drivers online for those interested in installing Vista. But it'll become increasingly difficult to find XP drivers for computers preloaded with Vista as we move into 2008.
